Facebook plunges, wiping out more than $50 billion in market value

Facebook stock fell as much as 8% Thursday after the company reported fourth-quarter earnings Wednesday evening.

The drop erased more than $50 billion from the social media giant's market cap, which now sits below $600 billion.

The drop comes after Facebook reported a 51% rise in expenses compared to its total in 2018. The expenses were largely related to the company's privacy and security improvements. That coincides with a drop in the company's operating margin, which fell from 45% in 2018 to 34% in 2019.

In addition to the increased expenses, Facebook also warned of advertising headwinds related to privacy and regulatory changes on the horizon. Facebook also said privacy improvements on Apple's iPhones and Google's Android software could hurt its ability to target advertising. In a note to investors Thursday, Pivotal Research Group reduced its rating from buy to hold on those advertising concerns.

...however, Twitter has refused political advertising and has made good faith efforts to weed out blatantly untrue tweets. Unfortunately, tRump*s tweets are now official presidential communications, so pulling the plug on tRump* could/would have legal ramifications. The true test for @Jack and @Twitter will be once the #OrangeAnus is voted out of office. If Twitter allows #tRump to continue after January 2021, then we have a major problem and I will be one of the first to delete my Twitter account and take other actions.

See these words? They appear courtesy of Democratic Underground - a Social Media provider.

People talking to each other is good, even digitally.

The problem is when social media platforms, like all businesses, get so big they turn into uncontrollable monsters. Monopolies are bad in any format.

Interestingly, it's when Facebook tries - or is forced - to clean up its act a little, it's the investors who have an issue with it.

That said, it's so true about Twitter. I think they've enabled Trump more than any other company, because it predates the 2016 election by years.

Seems every day I log in to see another boring story about what some MAGA “acquaintance” has posted, or some long tale about how some DUer has bravely taken on legions of Repubs- defeating them all on his FB page.

So Facebook come up with they are spending a lot to upgrade security on the platform, bullshit, they are doing nothing but continuing to allow lies and sabotage. They are trying to keep progressives that remain from leaving. Please leave and send that company into the dustbin of history.

since expenses and revenue have to be reported to the public. Also they publish user counts so we can see first hand the drop in membership.

And If they published a false report, then that's a crime too.

Either of those scenarios have the potential to send Zuckerburg to prison.

It could be true.

Or it could just be that markets are fickle and hate seeing FB spend money, even if it's on security and privacy.
