Vermont Republican Party serves as bank for Romney fundraiser (what are they up to?)

Call it a $5 million mirage.

The Vermont Republican Party suddenly has $5 million in its federal campaign fundraising account, but the money might as well not be there as far as statewide and local candidates on the GOP’s ballot in November are concerned.

Vermont, regarded as a sure bet for President Barack Obama in the fall elections, is an extremely unlikely recipient for the funds, said Jack Lindley, chairman of the Vermont Republican Party.

“It allows donors to give more than they normally would to just one candidate because we have bundled together states and the Republican National Committee and the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee and all that sort of stuff,” Lindley said.

Bob Biersack, a senior fellow with the non-partisan Center for Responsive Politics in Washington D.C., said he doesn’t understand why Romney Victory Inc., is putting large chunks of money in party affiliates that are not located in swing states where the presidential election will likely be decided.
