with all the downward revisions and labor force participation rates. Just...a really bad report. And it's going to dominate the next month.

The only positives I can see is that this report might have been a "bottoming out" exercise. Combined with the vastly different ADP report, we could see some major upward revisions in the September report. Unfortunately, that report comes out two days after the first Presidential debate, which will focus on domestic policy.

In other words, this is the jobs report of record for the first debate, which is...not fortunate.

2. MSNBC and CNN both Led 9 a.m. with "DISASTROUS" Job Numbers..

MSNBC had even set this whole framing up in the earlier segment by stating, "If job numbers are not as good as expected, any bounce from the convention will be lost because all anyone will be talking about are bad numbers, just like Palin's pick upstaged Obama in 2008."

And then the numbers came out, and they found a way to make them bad.

How in the HELL do they get away with this crap???? I turned it all off.

The worst thing for a politician is to appear out-of-touch with the reality of everyday life ... Pres. Obama still needs to be honest about the difficulties we face in this economy, it is very important for him to be credible.

This is not a good employment-unemployment report.

The only reason the unemployment percentage ticked down is because "368,000 Americans left the labor force."

The number of new jobs is seriously less than expected and last month's numbers were revised down.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-09-07/payrolls-in-u-s-rose-96-000-in-august-jobless-rate-falls.html

This election is going to be tough -- Pres. Obama must deal with the truth head-on.
Trying to sugar-coat a bad unemployment report is a losing tactic.

The bigger part of the truth is that Rmoney will make things much, much worse.

Did you really listen to the speech last night?

I guess it's that "empty chair" syndrome where some see a person there in some alternate universe?

And if they hadn't, unemployment would have risen to 8.4%.

8. Disappointing jobs report unlikely to change presidential contest (WP)

Today’s unemployment report was disappointing: only 96,000 jobs created last month, and revisions reducing the previous two months by 40,000, it was not only well below expectations but, more importantly, below what the economy needs to do to get people back to work. A lot of people are suffering in this economy, and for each of them, this is bad news.

As far as the presidential race goes, however, there’s nothing here that changes the status quo significantly. Last month, before the report was released, I said that “anything between 50,000 and 150,000 is not a very big deal politically, and it would take either an actual negative number or something over 200,000 to really shake things up.” So this number falls comfortably within that “not a big deal” range. Moreover, the headline unemployment rate number fell a bit, from 8.3 to 8.1 percent, making this a more mixed and muddled picture.

...after the private employer's association reported yesterday that the economy probably added 200K+ jobs last month. It seems that, every time that group releases an optimistic prediction, the official report the next day is a disaster. Every. Freakin'. Time.
