THE CHOICE: When 16 Year-Old Alyssa Douglas Calls For The President's Assassination on Twitter UPDx3
bytherehastobeawayFollow

Alyssa Douglas@Alyssa_Douglas
Someone needs to assassinate Obama...like ASAP #DieYouPieceOfShit
September 7, 2012

President Barack Obama tonight spoke, in the most stark, pressing, and persuasive way I've ever heard from him, of The Choice we face as a nation in this election: between an America where we all come together and one in which we're on our own; between an America that believes in keeping our jobs here and one in which we send jobs to other countries; between an America that believes in the fundamental right for people to live free from fear of ill health or of insurmountable college loans and one in which we have to give up our rights just so that a few can be given even bigger tax breaks; between an America that affirms its commitment to truth and science and one in which we shun the facts of our ailing planet and our impact on it; between an America filled with daughters who advance just as far as sons and one in which that reality never gets realized; between an America in which young immigrant children who've arrived without a choice can pursue the full extent of choices we as citizens should all be able to and one in which those same young boys and girls spend their lives reigned in by unfulfilled potential vitiated by the threat of deportation; between an America that is filled with hope for a brighter future and one in which we live within the shadows of the past.

......................

Because when a 16 year-old white girl takes to Twitter to openly call for the assassination of our President, you have got to wonder where we, as a society, have gone wrong; why we, as a society, have failed; how we, as a society, have allowed hatred to incubate within such a young, malleable mind. It is a choice that, as President Obama paralleled tonight in his invocation of our rights and responsibilities as a nation and as a society, we all shoulder the burden of making, because the consequences of that choice will shape a future of our own making.

Central Office tech for more years than I like to think about. Started in the phone biz as a construction cable splicer and entered the CO after a year. It is amazing the changes I've seen. When I first became a CO tech it was mostly electro-mechanical switching. Then came a big push to digital switching, deregulation and breaking Bell. The one thing I have a hard time with is that there seems to be such disrespect for the customers by the PTB.

Sep 2012

In the early 80's as members of a volunteer fire dept. we got CB radios. There were some folks so far in the woods they had no phones and CB was our contact. We had phone and CB and worked as a message relay system. Radios were pretty quite in my neck of the country, but we took a trip to Florida and were happy to have the radio. Lots of friendly chatter mostly, and warnings of "Bears" or "Smokey" going which ever way or stopped where ever. I liked that common helpfulness. Then we pulled into Phenix Ariz. Every channel was nothing but folks screaming obscenities at each other. Totally unreal. We wondered if there was something in the water... I guess with twitter folks have some identity. Is it like facebook where you are supposed to give your real name, or like DU where you can have real or "User" name?

It's not hard to imagine some bitter, twisted old hag--angry at how her pathetic life has turned out after a lifetime of stupid, misguided choices has left her stuck and frustrated at the lower rung of society's stinkhole--would type such a thing after putting away most of a bottle of cheap vodka.

Successful:
James Garfield - Crazy and probably not politically motivated
William McKinley - Are anarchists liberal?
Unabomber victims
SLA victims -in particular Foster who was not conservative but killed because SLA thought he was
Andrew Breitbart (sarcasm)

Attempts:
Reagan of course but not politically motivated
Harry Truman -attempted assassins left of him
George Wallace
Gerald Ford (twice) - would Manson followers be considered liberals?

Questionable if being liberal led to assassination
JFK killed because of hard line against Cuba (could be argued I guess if you do not accept Oswald as shooter)
RFK killed for position on Palestinians (again if you accept Sirhan as assassin)
Huey Long I won't even begin to try to figure that one out

Some members weren't, but most were, they were just wrapped in a facade of "Lefty Speak." Just the way both groups treated women speaks volumes, including rape (and not only Patricia Hearst).

Manson wasn't the least bit liberal, and neither was his so-called "Family," although some members like Linda Kasabian had a Hippie and commune background.

During the Bush administration, and the other Bush administration, and the Reagan administration, and the Nixon administration, many times I said aloud, in a conversation, with a single person or a group of people, that one of those presidents should be shot. Many people did, some with larger megaphones than I. Why? Because I was frustrated with the policies and actions of those presidents.

This is a digital age of instant mass communication, and this girl was expressing the same sort of frustration that I and many others on the liberal side have experienced in the past. The only difference, she has a much, much bigger megaphone than I had in my youth. Yes, she should realize that what she tweets is going to go around the world, that's why I don't tweet. But should we damn her for a sentiment that we've all experienced at one point or another?

Several authors expressed that, some, like Hunter Thompson, in graphic detail.

Is it an actual wish that the president die, no, it is an expression of frustration coming out of the realization that there is no way to stop what that particular president is doing.

His counter-culture came from his time spent with them.
The Hell's Angels, while not always honorable in the public view, were largely a group that enjoyed motorcycles and a life-style that gave rise to *the biker*
Hit movies like The Wild One came from the exposure Hunter Thompson provided
Not always accurate... because he was not one of them... he could only observe
As we all know, observations, without experience, is often fraught with inaccuracies

Should be put her in jail for that mistake, should we hound her about it, no, not unless we want to apply the law and the consequences to everybody who has said the same thing about Bush, Reagan, Nixon, et. al.

She did something all sixteen year olds do, a really dumb thing. Hopefully she learns her lesson and moves on.

In contrast to what you said in passing to a group of friends (which was still not ok), she wrote the word 'assassinate' and then sent it out for the world to see. She's a high school girl; her tweets are quite raunchy, mostly about male genitalia and getting drunk. Somehow, her parents never taught her it's not ok to tweet what she did; or worse yet, maybe they share the sentiment.

Sorry, I can't accept your rationalization.

Wasn't violent overthrow of the gov something that the war against communism was about? This is a teachable moment that I hope Dems latch onto and make a big stink over. Civility and good citizenship, benefits & responsibilities, are learned values.

But with raising my own young daughters (who are now young women,) it was up to ME to instill in them the respect, and the gravity of that time, and what is okay and not okay. Sadly, their friends were raised by parents that just didn't talk to their kids at all. They were pretty much on their own after grade 6. The teens have their own phones, own electronics, etc., and have no real connection with the real world. If it didn't happen on youtube, it didn't happen. Most of their friends are self absorbed and shallow, and it wouldn't occur to them that saying shit like that was illegal and immoral. They live in this weird privileged techno-bubble. I hide their feeds for the most part, but on a birthday or something when I end up on their page, I see how they and their friends use all sorts of slurs and sexist/bigoted terms (their friends are diverse and it's interesting to see how both black and white kids openly call each other the "n" word, playfully, of course) Not sure what's to blame, but my first guess would be a poor educational curriculum that doesn't challenge them or hold them accountable, little or no responsibilities, spoiled at home, plenty of time to post ignorant things on social media.

Reporting Alyssa doesn't bring me much comfort because I know that she's incapable of "getting it." She's incapable of understanding what she did wrong. It troubles me that someone that young could have such a cruel, uncaring attitude and so little common sense.

Fri Sep 7, 2012, 12:26 PM
Sep 2012

reminded me of an incident I witnessed, now close to 20 years ago, at the law firm I worked at in DC. One of the paralegals, a lovely Cuban woman who had been married to an African-American, was raising their daughter as an African-American, and who after she divorced her first husband had married an African-American man with 2 sons, was chatting with a couple of the word processors about the weekend. I should note that the word processors were also African-Americans. Anyway, Missy (not her real name) had had a rough weekend - her older stepson had been arrested for shoplifting. Her commentary included several uses of the n word to describe him and his friend who had also been arrested. Meanwhile, one of the associates and I, both white, were in an office across the hall, able to hear the entire conversation and were just sitting in total bemusement. Finally one of the word processors looked over, saw us and the expressions on our faces and burst into laughter, outing us to the group with "you should see the looks on X and Y's faces". I had the chance to talk to Missy one on one later in the day because we had to drive to a client's office and pick up a signed document. She made no excuses for using the n word, said that her sons and daughter used it all the time with their friends and so did she and her husband. She also told me it was ok for her to use it because she was considered to be African-American by her husband's family, and the rest of their family were indeed African-Americans, but that for me to use was racist. My response was that a word was demeaning and racist no matter who or how it was used. I won't get into the dressing down I got from her for using the word "niggardly", although she apologized when I showed her the word's derivation.

Not cyberbullying -- but bullying. He's gay. Luckily, most of the time he can stand up to what he hears. Last week on his campus he shut down a street preacher who said Jesus died for the sins of homosexuals. He had people coming up to him afterward congratulating him on standing up to that jerk. Yesterday in one of his classes he had to sit while a bunch of people started going off on gays. He said he was afraid to say anything because he would have been swarmed and the classroom was small. It could have gotten ugly fast. This upset him greatly.

I make no bones about how afraid I am for him in this society. It can only get worse.

At the end of his dialogue with the street preacher, he told the man that he forgave him for what he was saying, and held out his hand for a friendly shake. The preacher at first acted afraid and then shook my son's hand **only** after the crowd goaded him into doing so. In my opinion, my son exhibited more Christlike behavior that day than the fool he was arguing with, who claimed to have God on his side.

My son's been out since he was a sophomore in high school. He was one of a couple of kids who started a gay-straight alliance at his school, and he just heard from a former teacher there that this year membership has increased, and that kids are becoming more openly accepting and tolerant of each other.

So, yeah...I'm very proud of him.

Sept. 22 is Oliver W. Sipple Day in San Francisco, which honors the man who in 1975 grabbed the arm of Sarah Jane Moore when he saw her aiming a .38-caliber pistol at Gerald Ford outside the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco.

No, S.F. is not gaga over the half-term president. Instead, Sipple has for more than one-third of a century been used as a symbol of homosexual awesomeness for the gay rights movement -- even though he wasn't officially out at the time.

(A search will turn up information on his life, Herb Cane outed him in an article, Billy was helping Harvey Milk at the time, and being outed was bad with his family. Glad you are being so caring.)

You've Got to Be Taught

You've got to be taught
To hate and fear,
You've got to be taught
From year to year,
It's got to be drummed
In your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made,
And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade,
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught before it's too late,
Before you are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people your relatives hate,
You've got to be carefully taught!

The vile, angry hatred spewed onto my screen, like a drunk with the heaves. Truly this face fits

NOW I am concerned for the safety of the one person democracy needs in charge Today.
Maybe its cause I never got over JFK and RFK and MLK, or Kent State and this year at UCDAVIS. I don't know if its what my faith is founded upon, but both extremes need to heal. You can't build a bridge if you are building a wall. Sounds like somewhere it will be the middle between the two that will be where bridges are built. It's not me, I don't have that kind of resilience get too hurt too deeply and too easily, its a Joe Biden that could lead this. See it bothers me deeply, when Paul Wellstone ran against Rudy BOSHWITCH, there's Paul with his old green bus and that smile that just melts ice. He began rising in the polls, Professor Wellstone might go to D.C. I don't know if someone said it or I dreamt it, suddenly I feared he would be killed. When that plane went down with he and Sheila and so many, my gut response was :"The Sons of B..... killed him."

Some folks we just can't afford to lose, that our history both future and past are needed for. From what this 16 year old posted, until 2 a.m. I was see the same mindsets, oh its here on DU but not in overwhelming numbers. AND it may be vile but murder doesn't seem to be a focus or intent. OF course not having the brains got gave a rock, I posted as much...but was totally ignored. And the second time used Galatians 6:2.

Secret Service investigates Ohio teen's tweet about Obama

...Now the Secret Service is investigating the threat. The Clinton-Massie School District had a meeting with Douglas and her parents.

Bloggers and Twitter users followed the incident today with a discussion of hate speech.

The local Secret Service office said it will report its findings to the U.S. Attorney's Office for Southern District of Ohio. It is possible that the tweet will be determined to be not a legitimate threat to the president’s well being.

A North Carolina man was charged this week after making a much more specific threat via Twitter toward Obama....

106. I would edit the asshole's name out of the title

I strongly feel that these assholes names should never be printed, because it gets them fame they certainly do not deserve.

(I also think we shouldn't discuss this topic on a public board, because of crazies reading in)

Maybe if these people's names were not released, John Lennon would still be alive today as half the crazy stated reason was so that scumbag nothing loser could become famous.

I am just asking here, (and I have no right to do anymore than ask), but for the poster (long time one, could maybe edit the title and put choice words (or symbols) instead of the name of the person there.
If this person should make money or fame it will only inspire others, and we should not enable that, should we?

And because of things like this, I for one would report it to the authorities and hope people like this are given the maximum penalty allowed. (and what if the person doing it is not a kid, but their warped rightwingrepublicanlibertarianteaparty parent hiding behind saying they are a minor?
After all, MY constitutional rights are violated by people like this. And because of things like this, it has led me to value agencies that in the past I might not have(like homeland security among others).

imho.

121. I'm one of many who reported her

I sent a screenshot to the Secret Service and FBI.

The worst part was that she was yukking it up with some buddies about how people were telling her she was breaking the law. She LOVED boasting about wanting Obama dead.

There was another one last night, a female about 25, also on twitter, who said and reacted the same way. I know quite a few people, including me, also reported her.
