In 2008, Democrats owned the social media message, helping propel Barack Obama to the presidency.

In 2012, Republicans have largely caught up on the Internet. According to various reports, Americans for Prosperity, a conservative-leaving Political Action Committee linked to Koch Brothers, has spent at least $1.3 million on digital anti-Obama ads in the last two weeks.

But they might have over-thought the idea to spend $120,000 to buy sponsored Tweets that includes the hash tag #16trillionfail. The idea was to have people Tweeting about the country’s $16 trillion deficit.

Instead, Twitter users have been using the hash tag to blame Republicans.
