"There are some things private industry cannot do that only government can do."

Among the many mysteries of human biology is why complex diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure and psychiatric disorders are so difficult to predict and, often, to treat. An equally perplexing puzzle is why one individual gets a disease like cancer or depression, while an identical twin remains perfectly healthy.

Now scientists have discovered a vital clue to unraveling these riddles. The human genome is packed with at least four million gene switches that reside in bits of DNA that once were dismissed as “junk” but that turn out to play critical roles in controlling how cells, organs and other tissues behave. The discovery, considered a major medical and scientific breakthrough, has enormous implications for human health because many complex diseases appear to be caused by tiny changes in hundreds of gene switches ....

“which are [ithe fruit of an immense federal project involving 440 scientists from 32 laboratories around the world.”

So, can the government create jobs? Yes, it can.

Here.

The article continues with a chart showing a ratio of govt employees / population, smaller government under Obama.

If we want more of this, and to be able to deal with the very big challenges ahead, it will take more government investment. And that can't happen as long as tens of millions Americans wallow in the shambles of the last 40 years, living with the chains of the financial sector wrapped around their lives and imaginations, or while we hand the education sector over to Bill Gates. How can anything change as long as propping up the assets of the wealthiest with programs like QE1 and QE2, hoping that this will trickle-down on everyone, are seen as the solutions?

Maybe we start a direct hiring program and invest the money in the pockets of our neighbors instead of the assets of Mi$$ Rmoney, J.P. Dimon, and their ilk?(the kind of people who own the bonds that QE1 and QE2 purchased). Maybe get rid of tuition at a few hundred colleges and technical schools for 10 years, make sure they can deliver their stuff to any home via the tubes? Wouldn't that be a hell of an investment?

Or does that just sound crazy now...

... but only the government would ever dream of doing fairly (i.e. without taking a "membership has its privileges" approach thus favoring some over others).

that Adelson or the Koch bros have done? He's just a financial vulture, they inherited - neither has done anything but insure more misery for others, as far as I can tell, with all their resources.

They couldn't even imagine things on the scale the government can effect.

That private industry can do, but doesn't have the mindset to do.

Things that should be non-profit, like health care, prisons, and the military...hiring mercenaries is a really expensive way to wage war, for example.

Things that should be available to all, without having user fees: the postal service, fire fighting, forest and game preserves, policing, teachers. Education should be available to everyone, period. That includes, pre-k, head start, food stamp and healthy lunch programmes. The economy and the country benefit from a cohesive history, a knowlegeable electorate, and an educated and healthy work force.

Government is necessary for any civilized nation; countries without a functioning government fail.
