The Onion Gives Up
by Gangster Octopus
(SNARK)
(Not really a) Press Release from The Onion:
The task of making outlandish shit up has becoming impossible in light of the real world outlandish shit already happening. The line has become too blurred and quite frankly we are simply not capable of shining a light on the absurdity of the world that is its own fusion reactor of iridescence.
Some may think that it was just this one thing but it wasn't. Did you know a politician made a statement with a number and everything in it and then explained himself by saying it "wasn't meant to be a factual statement?". No really that happened, we didn't make it up. Or get this, there were folks at the Republican Convention espousing how their businesses didn't get built by government, while taking governmental money to survive. Yes that also happened!
Or here's a good one that is totally true. There was a House committee hearing on contraception, that included NO WOMEN. "What?" you say, "That is clearly a lie or a joke", but it isn't. It's real...like real people did that thing.
And then there is this thing called Honey Boo Boo that quite frankly is beyond satire, it is a new pardigm.
So seriously we give up.
Anyway,thank you for your support.

(14,177 posts)I gave up on trying to out satirize the conservatives a long time ago. I can't tell you how hard Bachmann made me cry when I realized nothing I could say would be enough of an exaggeration to keep up with her real life bat shit craziness. I remember hearing about her husband and I thought well that is original, but then I saw video of the dude he is how to put this delicately, ok I can't anyone who hasn't seen video of this guy all I can say is YouTube Marcus Bachmann. The human mind just isn't capable of coming up with the real life outrageous stuff the GOP does. Like Allen West saying he found commies under his bed. I mean these people are seriously wackadoodle.

(193 posts)By enlisting a known madman, Romney casts doubt on his OWN sanity.
And mittens once again proves he lacks the judgement to be president
Who exactly is West going to reach out to?

(27,985 posts)It would take a huge amount of not looking to not see that. That he runs a place to help gays not be gays is high irony. It's like a real life version of "But I'm a Cheerleader" (a hilarious movie about a ranch that tries to change gays).

(10,133 posts)IIRC, that made Lehrer hang it up. The satire, that is - he still kept teaching math, though.

(56,828 posts)Bush's speech upon assuming the presidency, with him promising our long national nightmare of peace & prosperity finally being over, and how he promised to get into at least one war and to run up the national debt.
This one is great, too.

(18,624 posts)The Republicans have raised the bar to such a level there's just no point in satire anymore.

(5,179 posts)The Onion has been incredible lately. Almost not even satire. Walking a delicate line between satire and plain bitterness. I love it.

(2,564 posts)I really, really miss Ambrose Bierce.
A party such as our current Republican needs his refined literary axe and his level of cynicism to bring it to its knees. He would be having a wonderful time right now!
Mr. Bierce? Are you out there somewhere? Please come back from your vacation.

(3,190 posts)I've been thinking the same thing for a long time...the level of irony the GOP/rethug/RW/teanutbag has foisted upon the world is so outside of comprehension that the word "irony" doesn't begin to describe it. I believe a new word needs to be invented to get the full true essence of the level of over-the-top craziness.

(22 posts)This is because all of the independent newspapers and stations have been bought by the 1% bullshitters, couple that with the FACT that a large part of former middle class America is addicted to bullshit and would rather believe those lies, than deal with the truth about the so called "conservative republican parties who whole political philosophy started with Nancy Reagan: " JUST SAY NO" to everything. Talk about a party that is in total denial.

(13,180 posts)Every time Romney gets up there and twists in the wind trying to avoid being taken for who he is, he puts a satirist out of work.
Every time Ryan reveals his sports prowess and gargantuan intellect, Jon Lovitz cries.
Someone has to stop this.

(885 posts)Previously, R's were the "masters of framing the debate and staying on message". This cycle is so... disjointed and backwards, I just don't know how to justify it.
It feels like they are literally trying to throw the election. Waiting for everything to get fixed again, so we can let them back in to screw it all up as they normally do.
While I'd love to believe they're this stupid, the thought just keeps coming back.
I think it says something about half this country, that even with all the screw-ups and stupidity, that people are still willing to vote for Romney.

(2,424 posts)When reality is so bizarre?
How can the Fox lemmings buy into such weirdness?
I always wondered how a populace can get behind fanatical leaders and their distorted visions. I always wondered this from a historical perspective and about countries far, far away.
Never in my lifetime did I believe it could happen here.
