(36,818 posts)A lot of campaign staffers work for chump change and many of them find themselves tossed aside once the election is over. I'd be willing to bet there's some low level McCain staffers out there with a copy saved for a rainy day.

(12,530 posts)job, for 30 years and just wants to say... fuck it! Know what I'm sayin'?

(75,480 posts)cyberspace somewhere. It might not take a Price, Waterhouse insider to do it but an IRS one or just a good anonymous hacker.

(1,484 posts)...who have access to this information. And the thought of receiving a $1M reward for dropping the dime on a total louse like Romney has to be at least tempting to some of those IRS people.

(7,290 posts)I want to see the returns too, but I don't want someone breaking the law to make it happen.

(7,290 posts)And I'm sure many others don't care either. Personally, I'm not into advocating breaking the law, even if it helps win an election.

(75,480 posts)I'm more inclined to believe that it's a publicity stunt to keep the tax issue in front of the news, almost as good as having the tax returns themselves. Larry isn't stupid.

(31,949 posts)He always makes these offers and nothing ever comes from them. Hopefully he has good criminal lawyer. He is soliciting for someone to commit a felony which is a felony itself. Once in possession of the tax returns he would be committing another felony.

(2,431 posts)I would amend your statement to say that I hope Flynt is willing to back the winner up with legal support.
Even when I was a teen with raging hormones, I found Hustler to be disgusting, but if he walks his talk, I'm behind him.

(62,444 posts)He is not specifying the means.
There may be people with contractual obligations not to disclose - i.e. the McCain campaign. That would cause civil liability, but would not be a crime.
Also, I can say here - I wish someone would take all of Wells Fargo's furniture, like they did to that couple in California - but if I am not directing that to any specific person, I'd have to look at what constitutes a solicitation under the relevant statute.
I'll pay $100 to anyone who smokes marijuana on the floor of the House of Representatives!
Do you seriously believe I just committed a crime by saying that?
former9thward
(31,949 posts)It is a felony for anyone not authorized for government purposes to access anyone's tax returns or to distribute their contents to anyone else. It does not matter the 'means'. He is soliciting a felony to be committed which is a felony.

MANative
(4,112 posts)is that it keeps Romney's taxes in the news and alive as an issue. The reward is just the stunt that achieves a very important political goal!

(24,853 posts)Are you going to go running to the press if a pimp comes to you on the street and says "I've got copies of Romney's tax returns!"? That's all Larry Flynt is... a pimp.
For that matter, how believable will it be if someone, ANYONE, comes out and says "We hacked into the IRS database and here're Romney's tax returns!" or We broke into the office of xxxxx and here're Romney's tax returns!"
Would anyone treat the returns as the real deal? Would ANY reputable news source put this information out to the world and stake their reputation on it? Can you say "Dan Rather"?
If hackers OR burglars jump into the light claiming to have Mitt Romney's tax returns, I'm afraid I'd have to investigate their backgrounds AND their motivations before I'd put it out there and stake my news organization's reputation on it.
My first question is how many degrees of separation are there between the hackers/burglars and KKKarl Rove.

(3,170 posts)They are offering to destroy them for a million from Mitt or to publish them if they get the million from elsewhere.
They claim they stole them from PWC.
This could get interesting
