Poll: Bachmann in danger

A new survey provided exclusively to Salon shows the Minnesota congresswoman's lead down to just 2 points
Despite her national fan base and a massive war chest, Rep. Michele Bachmann may be in more danger than most suspect, with a new poll showing her lead diminished to just two points. Independent voters have swung against her by nearly 20 points in just two months, from a 4 percent advantage to a 15 point disadvantage. The internal poll, conducted by Democratic pollsters Greenberg Quinlan Rosner at the behest of Democrat Jim Graves’ campaign and shared with Salon, shows that Bachmann’s favorability rating has tumbled since their last survey in mid-June, and finds Graves gaining ground with independents as his name recognition grows.

Overall, the poll shows Bachmann leading Graves 48 – 46 percent, within the margin of error. The race has moved significantly among independents, with a 20-point net shift toward Graves, from a 41 – 45 percent disadvantage in June to a 52 – 37 percent lead now. Among independents, Bachmann’s favorability rating has slipped 4 points while her unfavorability rating has jumped 7 points. Overall, she’s viewed mostly negatively. Among all voters, 40 percent give her a positive job rating, while a sizable 57 percent give her a negative one, with a plurality of 35 percent giving the most negative answer possible — “poor.”

Graves’ campaign manager (and son) Adam Graves told Salon that the numbers show his candidate is well positioned to beat Bachmann. “Obviously, we’re very excited about it. The first thing that’s notable is that obviously her recent comments, the stories that she’s created for herself, have really hurt her among folks in the middle,” he said. Bachmann, who had tried to keep a lower profile after aborting her presidential bid, grabbed headlines this summer for her implication that Muslims in the U.S. government may be secret agents of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Found it really hilarious that a guy would have a Walker sticker on his truck (Wisconsin's Walker doesn't even represent Minnesota), yet *not bother to represent for the national rethug prez / vp ticket as well by also sticking an Rmoney/Lyan sticker on there...

That's why states gerrymander to put the seats in their control. They almost have to get caught robbing a bank to turn the vote against them. Here in Ohio Jim Traficant got caught red handed stealing our tax money, and he still picked up 18,000 votes while running from his prison cell.

As I see it, that it's such a close race should be worrisome to Bachmann.

Good luck Minnesota.

A congressinal representative is supposed to be working for constituents in the district, not chasing all over the country being the "darling" of the right wing media. Are there public works projects coming to her district? Is she sponsoring or co-sponsoring legislation that supports the people of Minnesota? Is she acting in support of citizens and local businesses in dealing with the federal government?

If not, even the nut jobs should demand better representation.

Mon Sep 10, 2012, 02:26 PM

It "horseshoes" around the Twin Cities (very much DFL territory) and runs quite a ways from West to East. In the West is St. Cloud, a very conservative city with some serious racial issues in its past and present, and is mostly rural or small cities/towns after that.

Out-state Minnesota - that is, anything outside the Twin Cities metro and Duluth - is pretty red. The Twin Cities suburbs have been trending red in the past decade, but is going more purple recently.

But the MN 6th is a strange creature, geographically. When it was believed that Minnesota would lose one seat in the U.S. House after the 2010 census, many believed that the MN 6th would be the one to go.

On the upside, after the 2010 census, the state re-drew the districts and Bachmann no longer lives in the district she represents - she is now represented by DFLer Betty McCollum.

Her district is the white flight suburbs of Minneapolis/St Paul.
I lived in the Twin Cities from 1999 - 2006,
and bicycled everywhere, even during the Minnesota Winter.
Going North/NE out of Minneapolis, a line is crossed that is palpable.
In the area around White Bear Lake to Stillwater,
I've seen tons of "Rush is Right", and "I (heart) Jason Lewis" bumper stickers
in addition to numerous Rebel Flags.

It is a beautiful area, and the bike path to Stillwater is one of my favorites,
but it is like entering a time Machine, complete with "US OUT of UN" signs in front yards.

It IS bizarre and creepy, being so close to one of the very best multicultural, Liberal cities in the USA.

No offense to any DUers who live in that area.
I'm sure there are many solid Liberals who live there too.

34. If Graves pulls off a win in this district,
Mon Sep 10, 2012, 01:03 PM
Sep 2012

I hope everyone will remember that for the next four years. Graves is a middle-of-the-road Democrat. Some might call him a blue dog Democrat. If he manages to beat Bachmann in that heavily Republican district, I will be forever grateful. Graves will vote with the Democratic caucus in Congress, but he's probably not going to be a constant progressive voice.

A blue dog is always better than a rabid dog. Truly. It's a lesson we forgot in 2010. It has hurt us all.

My Congresswoman is Betty McCollum. She is a solid, staunch progressive, and the people in her district chose her for that reason. Michelle Bachmann's district is far from similar to the district I live in. We're all working to replace Bachmann. When and if we do, we need to remember who she is and help her replacement out when we can.

I will work to make the Obama victory so huge, these right wing dangerous congresspeople are voted out of office. There are quite a few of them that represent their own narrow ideology. It's time to value good government again! government is not "the problem" unless it is selfish government.

I've heard that Jim's been out campaigning Big-time these past several weeks/months --at the State Fair, parades, picnics, etc.

My parents' summer lake property/cabin is actually two doors down from Jim Graves' summer cabin ("up north", as some of the natives call it) in north-central Minnesota. He IS a great guy. My wife and I usually see him every summer when we make it up to Minnesota for some vacation/lake time.

We were up there this past week, and missed seeing him because he was down in his home district campaigning. His district is 2 1/2 hours south of his 'up north' property.

Anyway, Jim is a great guy and businessman (truly self-made), and I hope he sends Bachmann packing. I've donated to his campaign online, although we're from nowhere near Minnesota.

I don't think it's fair. She doesn't just tarnish the image of her district. She tarnishes the whole state of Minnesota. I really don't like that. I would rather be known as the state that elected Al Frankin or the state of Charlie Brown. Anyone but Bachmann. Bachmann makes me miss Jesse Ventura a great deal.

In Minnesota, you are required to live in the state to run for the U.S. House, but not required to live in that particular district.

But, you can only vote for representation for the district in which you live.

Honest to God, the rest of the world, as well as the entire nation, are sickened by the display of lunatics running the asylum. This clown, dumb-ass, idiot NEVER should have been allowed to Washington for ONE DAY, let alone two terms. Joe Walsh, Louie Gohmert, Steve King, Allan West...and the rest of these complete fool/clowns that have embarrassed this nation with their presence are a complete disgrace to the legacy of Congress. Such pathetic excuses for politicians. These are the sorts of idiots that help America lose all confidence in our government.

However, they DO represent "the people"...and we are NOT the smartest, most proud nation in the world these days.

A long while back he got the Goop endorsement and primaried incumbent Republican governor Arne Carlson. Carlson crushed him in the primary and won re-election. Arne was recently booted out of the Republican party for acting like a sane, reasonable and rational adult. He was a thoroughly decent governor in the MN tradition, but once the buybull crazies took over the party he was intolerable to them.

That's one and the same thing: a handful of fascist billionaires with a visceral hatred of democracy.

It would be a delight if Mrs. Bachmann goes down once and for all, along with all the other tea partiers from the class of 2010 and the ones like Bachmann and Steve King who were already there to roll out the welcome mat for the newcomers.

While I am aware that Americans are not as aware of current affairs as voters in a democratic state as they ought to be and that many consume an unhealthy diet of disinformation and misinformation from Fox News and Rush Limbaugh, it is heartening to see that voters in this election are aware enough of who's really dangerous to ignore the propaganda on the airwaves paid for by the Koch brothers, Sheldon Adelson, Foster Friess and other similar reprobates.

107. Paper ballots, machine counted with paper printout.
Tue Sep 11, 2012, 03:10 AM
Sep 2012

Machines must be secured from physical and electronic tampering, and are not allowed to have any wireless communication ability.

Precinct judges are always from at least two different parties.

Paper ballots are secured for possible later review. Ballots are always handled by at least two judges of different parties.

Electronic results are not considered official until paper printouts are reconciled by bi-partisan state canvassing board.

Very close machine results in any race are not valid until recounted by hand.

Random post-election auditing by hand verifies accuracy of machine count. Each county hand-recounts specific races at a minimum of two precincts. Inaccuracies (more than a few votes in most cases) trigger further audits, although that's never been necessary to the best of my knowledge. (Hence, why I believe it's a good system.)

It's a practical way to quickly report the results from 3 million or so votes, with checks, balances and safeguards all written into law.

I live in Minnesota and I just contributed to Graves campaign. He looks good to the voters because he is from the district ,is a self made business man, is a practicing Catholic and carefully avoids making statements on the marriage amendment or the voter I.D. Issue. that being said I have family members who live there and they are a scary kind of conservative. The kind that won't listen to reason or bother to check out facts. Some of them are racist and anti Muslim . Ironically ,this area was a solid blue just three decades ago. This is Lake Woebegone territory and It's a very conservative Roman Catholic area with Stearns County Syndrome being a factor in its right ward tilt.

124. Stearns not as scary as Wright
Sun Oct 28, 2012, 09:09 AM
Oct 2012

I don't doubt you when you say your relatives think that way. But keep in mind that Congressional district lines cut Stearns in half with the more urban St. Cloud in Bachmann's district and the more rural in my district, the 7th. Both of her last Democratic challengers have been from Stearns County. Graves(love him, hope he wins) was born and raised there. If you want scary, go to Bachmann's real strength, the religious right highway(U.S Hwy 12) corridor through Wright Co. There are actually Constitution Party members living there. Like I've said before, they want to go back to the 50's-the 1850's. Think Ron Paul's economic and foreign policy, but instead of his social libertarianism(which I sometimes agree with) they replace it with extreme social conservatism. They want to put biblical beliefs into the U.S. Constitution in the same way countries like Saudi Arabia have put Sharia law into theirs. Doesn't sound very Christian to me. They've come to the McLeod Co.(also conservative) Fair in previous years selling their bumpers stickers and I just walk by shaking my head.
