H. W. looked pretty unbeatable after Desert Storm went off about a flawlessly as a war/military action could go.

Cue up a economic downturn, Bush looking in awe at a checkout scanner and his faux-pas of looking at his watch during the debates (plus other things) and "hello, President Bill Clinton".

McCain was starting to establish a lead in 2008 until the economy cratered and he handled the immediate after-effects poorly. Absent the economic downturn I'm not sure that Palin's increasingly exposed imcompetence would have turned the election to Obama.

RE: Bin Laden - didn't most polls show that Obama got just a small bounce off that military success but that it disappeared within a week or so when the economy came back to bear?

With the R/R campaign starting to verbally self-destruct on a regular basis as long as there's no major scandal and as long as the economy wheezes along then Obama probably gets re-elected. If the economy craters then Bin Laden isn't going to matter any more than a hill of beans in the end.

My own little piece of anecdotal evidence: A Large Business Owner to whom I was talking over the weekend said he will vote for Obama only because he got OBL.

I figure they let Romney win the nomination, no real contenders were in the race this year, in order to get him out of their hair. I agree with you too that they also wanted to get rid of the teabaggers who have become way to hard to control, and who have given the GOP congress the worst ratings in history!

I think their goal was to clean house and like you said try and reinvent themselves for 2016. I do think they want to take control of congress, but it isn't look so good for them right now. As for the house, well as I said it's time to "clean" out the teabaggers, and hope they don't lose to many seats, of course that isn't look to good for them either at the moment!

They believe what they want to believe despite the facts.

"Ohioans confused about bin Laden’s death"
Source: Salon.com
By Jillian Rayfield

According to a PPP poll of likely Ohio voters, 15 percent of Republicans in Ohio think Romney is “more responsible” for bin Laden’s death than Obama, while 47 percent of Republicans are “not sure” whether Obama or Romney deserves more of the credit.

Six percent of the overall respondents gave Romney credit where credit is not at all due. Thirty-one percent of them weren’t sure whether the president or the candidate deserves more credit.
