Is there something we, at DU, can do to support our DU teachers?

This is a response to an outstanding thread by DonRedwood about kids going hungry in his class. Please read and rec it: http://www.democraticunderground.com/10021308777

There are many people here at DU who are not exposed to what goes on in the poor school districts around the country. Posts like the ones written by DonRedwood are shocking to us. Some of the responses are heartbreaking.

Is there something we can do, like set up a forum specifically aimed at helping DU teachers like DonRedwood? I'm not talking about money donations because I'm not sure if there are rules about this on DU. Besides, many of us are living paycheck to paycheck and already making donations to other efforts. Perhaps we could set up a fund in the future, but for now, let's start with supplies.

But if we had things we could contribute like extra supplies, coupons, gift certificates, etc., to DU teachers, it's something. The sender pays postage.

DU teachers could post about what they need. If someone can help, respond to the post or send a PM. When the need has been met, the teacher could ask a moderator to lock the post so we know it's been resolved.

I realize that many teachers would appreciate this kind of help. But we need to start small so we can manage the problem without getting overwhelmed. So let's start with the teachers on DU and their immediate colleagues, and give them a hand.

What do you think?
