what's worse she also said, "Don't tell me about Covid, my nephew just died of it."
Here is the story: had to drive downstate for medical reasons. The Mackinaw bridge, great, toll takers wearing masks, gloves and no cash, only credit card that is inserted into the card machine without the person ever touching your card. The State of Michigan is being responsible to try and keep her citizens safe. But, don't drive downstate because it is chock full of trumpists who blindly follow their "no mask", fake pres.
So, had to stop for gas. The woman at the cash register (late 60's) was not wearing a mask. I began talking with her and showed my concern for her because she was not wearing a mask and 90% of the people at this gas station were not wearing masks, so I showed concern.
She went off on me and said her nephew just died of Covid. I high tailed it outta there. When I got home I called the Health Department and told them that if this woman was in contact with her nephew than why is she not quarantining herself and NOT EVEN WEARING A MASK.
The local Health Dept. and their Covid task force was going over to talk to that woman and investigate the place of business. What about tracking and tracing, I asked? The Covid nurse was right on it. I am not gong to take the shit from shitheads that practice trump.

(3,741 posts)I tied to show concern but I got slapped. Now I am so worried about contact with her. I was wearing a mask, plexiglass was up, but I am now worried. But these trumpers think differently ... they are courting death and don't even know it ... and I feel that they hate those of us trying to do our civic duty.

(108,955 posts)She may not even have a nephew at all.
You were wearing a mask and the plexiglass was up, and you only have the word of a non-mask wearer about her supposed nephew. Please try not to worry too much about this. I know it's hard!

And if she gets sick, I hope she only gets sick - and not worse. But maybe sick enough that when she recovers, she might have a greater understanding of, and appreciation for, us mask-wearers.

In N.C., everywhere is pay at the pump and sanitizer provided right there. I use the paper towels to handle the gas pump anyway, but why go inside?

(740 posts)We spent 3 days this week going back and forth to Pittsburgh for medical reasons and everyone was wearing masks at the places we stopped at. A Home Depot that we drove by had a big sign NO MASK NO SERVICE. However in our part of the state up by the NY border NW end of the state, a lot of them are not wearing masks, but then I live in Republican Trump loving Hell.
DeminPennswoods
(15,265 posts)open to the public must wear masks and that these same businesses refuse service to anyone entering or trying to enter without a mask. That's why people are wearing them. Lots are taking them off as soon as they leave the store. But go outside and watch walkers, joggers, cyclists, people doing yard work or otherwise working outside and few are wearing masks.
Once PA counties get to the "green" phase of re-opening, only the most risk-averse will still be wearing masks.
FTR, Kwik-Fill gas stations in PA do pump the gas for you.

(15,265 posts)People do wear masks here, but not many have them on when they are outside.
I'm not noticing a lot of the 6' social distancing when shopping except for when people are in line at checkout or the pharmacy. Just out of curiosity, I walked off 6'. It's about 3 normal steps distance for me, the normal distance I'd keep from anyone regardless. Just observing people, it's easy to see they naturally space themselves. Think about it, when sitting in an office, movie theatre, church, classroom, people don't sit right beside others unless it's absolutely necessary. Even with assigned seating, if there are empty seats, people will move to give themselves more space.
Tbh, I think ventilation systems have as much, if not more, to do with spread as masks and social distancing. If I were a business or company, I'd be buying the best air filters I could and installing them.

(5,062 posts)enforcing the wear mask rule but some are not. When we were in the red, all I heard was whining because they could not go out to eat. Most eat bar food while they guzzle so it was a double whammy for them. I started stocking up on food and hootch in January because I knew even then that it would make it's way here and we had a jackass at the helm so it would be bad. My neighbors all think I am paranoid because when I do go out, I wash whatever I get before I bring it in the house. I also do not let anyone in and talk to people that drop by through the glass storm door. I don't think it is paranoa, I think it is intelligent thinking. And you are right. This is trump country.

(740 posts)keeping yourself safe is more important. Whining seem to be all todays Trump lovers are good for. I stop paying any attention to them after Trump stole the election, I don't need anymore stress in my life. It will take a long time to undo all the damage Trump and his base have done to our nation.

(9,952 posts)I keep space, do not go into crowded places, and am there for a short time. I take care of me. I read a meme saying to teach kids to yell loudly, he isn't wearing a mask are we going to die, or some such comment. No.
I am not here to direct other people their behavior. If i feel so strongly, I will go to a place where they are required. If they are not, it is not my place to say something. It is a turn off.

(3,741 posts)you are being too nice, not your fault because you sound like a beautiful person and I say that with love. BUT THEY WILL FUCKING KILL YOU and ME if they don't practice social distancing and WEARING a MASK in public places. Not nice people.

(9,952 posts)what to do, and rudely at that. And feel self righteously doing it. I am hearing this too much. I do have conversations about wearing masks in public. I do feel it is our responsibility. I do wear because of my health. I look at the environments people do and don't and then take actions when I see a lack of concern. But I do not agree with this attitude or thought.
I am the odd one out, obviously. Mostly people agree with this. I don't.

around the highway. A fisherman that insists on casting his line toward a bunch of kids at the shore. That's dangerous behavior that should be confronted or reported. When one is able, one should. It's very much part of the new reality we find ourselves in.

(9,952 posts)Choice, about everyone is wearing a mask. I go into Walmart, I am sitting in about 15% mask wearers. So, I go to Walmart early and get just what I need and am out of there quickly, then go shop in Market of Choice.

(9,886 posts)Everyone needs to stop minding other people's business. I was bagging my groceries the other day, wearing a mask because it was required, and this store employee came racing up to me to tell me that the cashier and I, who had our backs to each other while we went about our business, were too close and she then proceeded to move all my groceries to the checkout line next to the one I was using. Meanwhile, she was face to face with me. I was not rude about it and she then went on to say that her husband was in the hospital dying of COVID. It occurred to me to wonder why she was working n a customer facing position under the circumstances.
I'm sure she felt she was well justified in doing what she did, but in fact, she inserted herself into a situation that had nothing to do with her and it was not appreciated.
the only control I have is over myself and my own behaviors. People are pretty fucking nuts on a good day.

(14,852 posts)By the way, the gas stations around me seem to be the same way. None of the clerks are wearing masks, and I haven't seen a single customer wearing them either. (Observed from my car, sanitizing my hands after paying-at-the-pump.)

My mask is to protect YOU...Your mask is to protect ME. That is why we have to be in this together.
And that is why the trump attitude is so callous and harmful - it promotes division, not Solidarity, when the best weapon we have against this biological menace is Solidarity.

(527 posts)Really, you are not going to change their minds. Frankly it reminds me of the good christians who feel the need to tell me how to live my life. Setting an example of being cautious and polite Is how I think we should act. If you are upset when people do not wear masks I think you should search out where it is a requirement and go only to those places.

(6,930 posts)Thinking someone will change their mind about wearing a mask just because a complete stranger tries to shame them into it is just silliness imo.
