(70,684 posts)(Breaking out my stock post about Mittens' character being Mormon characteristics: )
Somebody said that Joe SCABS on MSNBC said that AMBITION was the answer to why he wants to be president. Thats too simple. The BBC documentary, The Mormon Candidate, said that Mormons CRAVE respectability.
Plus, HIDE their true motives and agenda, are mendacious. The motive in the incessant proselytizing is to *attract* (convert) people, extending to physical appearance of being squeaky clean, "normal" (khakis) and big on entertainment (OSMONDs). It aint just the OSMONDs: Find a Mormon and theres all kinds of singin n dancin going on, besides other forms of entertainment, like Glen BecKKK.
If anybody thinks I'm generalizing or pushing personal observations into bigotry territory: I knew a teacher who was a Mormon bishop, totally very personable and totally "nice" *and* indefatigable sponsor of the folkloric dance club, attract attract attract, and a couple of their missionaries would not reveal what (beyond Jesus) they believe differently ("milk before meat" . When Mittens evades and dodges, he's not doing secular flip-flopping, he's doing an ingrained Mormon thing.
In that BBC documentary, Mittens' second cousin, who is ex-Mormon and therefore "alienated" (shunned) by/from family, said, "They don't realize how much they are into brainwashing."
******Plus, in that video, where he says he "encouraged" out-of-wedlock mothers to go for adoption, in the BBC documentary a woman says he THREATENED her with excommunication if she didn't give the child to the church.

(5,049 posts)The truth is there are more ex-Mormons than Mormons in this world. Ask around and I'm sure anyone can hear this story told over and over again.

(2,424 posts)My 87 year old Dad was born in Logan, Utah and his mother was born in Smithfield, Utah.
Ponder how far back that goes.
Needless to say, a large portion of my family practically disowned me because I decided to go to college and serve in the US Navy instead of going on a mission.
I never was "in to it" like my other relatives were. My sister is deeply devout. There are many good qualities they stress. Perhaps the biggest (to me) is the emphasis on a strong family unit. But, they can be rather imposing and that simply isn't my personality type.
As a young man, I got hooked on the "Cosmos" series by Carl Sagan and I have never looked back. When I went to college, I was awed by Issac Newton. Took several courses in calculus/differential equations and learned that he developed many mathematical axioms in his pursuit of physics. To this day I believe he is the smartest man that has lived on this planet.
Hence, my religion is science and math. I was indifferent about religion for many years, but the GOP has transformed me in to a person that despises religion. As I'm not the only one, then the GOP can be described as the organization that has soured the view for many, many people about religion. I'm speaking of potential "converts" of course.
I absolutely believe that Mitt Romney is the worst thing that could have ever happened to the Mormon Church. All of the time and money spent on missions will be largely negated because of one man.

(70,684 posts)My point was that "anger" in this thread was considered as one individual's (secular) temperament, whereas the profound frustration this fellow exhibits is rooted in the constant challeges he (and his fellow Mormons) get from the outside. It's relevant to what kind of a person he is. In the o.p.'s video it's clear that he could blow a brain gasket because of his torment, his keeping his cult "separate" from other issues in politics.
There's a point here that will be shut down by your implying bigotry.

I know Harry Reid is Mormon but he seems to be a very different type.

Fuck you Romney, that's called LYING TO GET MODERATES TO VOTE FOR YOU against Ted Kennedy????
He will say anything to get elected. Please remember this. He openly admits it, that it was just words to get elected, until he was in office. So any shit he promises anyone is NOT gonna happen. He will do whatever it takes to win. He's is one scary and slimy piece of work.

(1,235 posts)This is, in parts, the most oddly... human portrayal I've seen of Romney.
In the middle, his discussion on how his religion and secular role of office are distinct arenas, for example. Do I agree with those secular choices? Of course not. But that was a rather rational, thoughtful view on it, that his faith dictates his personal actions but doesn't impact the people he governs. And his clear frustration of being hounded about his faith instead of the issues of the election.
Mind you, the part about the second coming, and some war, and Jerusalem...well, that was off-the-wall batshit crazy talk. But, still.

(4,276 posts)if his faith leads him to say that they believe people should be able to make their own choices about whatever....why would it be necessary to overturn Roe vs. Wade? The law allows for people to make their own decisions about abortion...it's already on the books. It doesn't force anyone to get an abortion. It doesn't impede the choice of anyone. To overturn it opens the door to making abortion illegal again and THAT, my friends, does NOT allow for people to make their own decisions. Am I missing something here? It sounded to me like he contradicted his own argument. I do know they believe that people should obey the law of the land and dammit, Roe vs. Wade is The Law of the Land.
Duh.

(47,418 posts)listening to Romney speak without the prepared talking points. I can understand why he is so careful not to allow the real Romney to surface. He is actually more intelligent than he appears on the stump, but also more overbearing and argumentative, very defensive.
That Jan Mickelson is an excellent interviewer. He was so prepared and asked great questions. I think Romney wasn't expecting that. Maybe he thought Iowan radio personalities were all right-wing hicks that he could manipulate and control. Early on in the interview, I perceived that Romney knew the guy was better informed than he was.
Thanks for posting, very interesting.
