'You just don't do that, Mr. President': Televangelist Pat Robertson condemns Trump's 'law and order' response to protests

Washington (CNN)Televangelist Pat Robertson on Tuesday condemned President Donald Trump's response to nationwide protests over the death of George Floyd and police brutality, saying "you just don't do that, Mr. President"

His comments come amid criticism of police tactics used to clear out a crowd of peaceful protesters near the White House Monday ahead of Trump's walk across the square they had been protesting in and photo op in front of St. John's Episcopal Church. Trump, who on Monday touted himself as a president of "law and order," vowed to send US military forces into cities if governors did not quell protests that at times have turned violent. Trump has been condemned by church leaders over the move and his inflammatory rhetoric that has stoked racial tensions.

Robertson, founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network and one-time presidential candidate, spoke about the protests at the beginning of The 700 Club on Tuesday and said now is a time for understanding and comfort.

"It seems like now is the time to say, 'I understand your pain, I want to comfort you, I think it's time we love each other,'"Robertson said. "But the President took a different course. He said, 'I am the "President of law and order,' and he issued a heads-up."

Robertson continued. "He said, 'I'm ready to send in military troops if the nation's governors don't act to quell the violence that has rocked American cities.' A matter of fact, he spoke of them as being jerks. You just don't do that, Mr. President. It isn't cool!"

I'm honestly surprised that he criticized him at all, given everything else that he seemed to ignore.

Ol’ Pat opposed to the tactics tRumpolini used?? tRump better listen up. Ol’ Pat has the ear of a certain group of Christians and if he has lost them, he is in big trouble. He is counting on them to vote for him in November. So maybe Ol’ Pat was offended at tRumpolini’s shameless use of the church and (gasp!) the Bible as a prop?! He went too far for even Ol’ Pat.

tRumpolini needs to pay attention here. The ground is shifting under his feet. You can mess with a lot of things, say a lot of bad things, do a lot of bad deeds. But most Christians take special offense at the Bible being used in that way. It is viewed as Holy and beyond special. Even they (as devoted tRump fans) recognized that as too much. We wondered what it would take for them to finally have enough of him. I think we have found our answer.

tRump being an outsider to the world of Christianity has kept him unaware of certain truths. You don’t tug on Superman’s Cape. You don’t spit into the wind. You don’t pull the mask off of the old Lone Ranger. And you do NOT ever mess around with a Christian’s Holy Book, The Bible.

His approval rating has usually been around 40-44% (39% in the poll in question), so it always seemed like, no matter how batshit crazy he got, 3/5 of the country was still going to back him. But the Reuters poll that said only 33% approved of his handling of this crisis, so that's 6% lower than his overall numbers. Which means there is potential for some serious slippage here. What's more, his approval rating for this crisis was lower than the percentage who thought police were doing a good job (43%), so he's failing even among a lot of the knee-jerk law and order crowd.

Almost all of his support appears to come from people who don't approve of the protests anyway. While 64% said they were sympathetic to the protests, 27% said they were not sympathetic to the protests.

Even among republicans, who approve of the president at an 82% rate, only 67% approve of his handling of this crisis.

That's still too high, of course, but when someone like Pat Robertson speaks out against it I think the numbers could fall even lower.

Here's an article on the poll: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-minneapolis-police-poll-exclusive/exclusive-most-americans-sympathize-with-protests-disapprove-of-trumps-response-reuters-ipsos-idUSKBN239347
