The White House Correspondents Association used to hold the power of credentialing reporters, from its inception in the early 1900s until several decades ago when it ceded that authority to the press office of the WH.

MISTAKE

We see the manifestations of that mistake now with a WH that not only allows stooges and shills, but takes it upon itself to punish reporters by pulling press passes on whim.

In 2004, a FREEPER was identified in the James Brady Briefing Room asking questions. Very unsavory character. Karl Rove had given him permission to sit in the Briefing and ask questions. A Washington scandal ensued.

Since that time, there has been a call for credentialing authority to be returned to the WHCA. Reporters covering Congress have their access codified in Senate rules. Reporters covering the WH have no such protection.
