Senior WH official says Esper's remarks this morning were received "very poorly" at WH.

Esper's press conference this a.m. is not going over well at the White House, where officials were unaware of what he was going to say. He had already been on thin ice with POTUS, who had been venting about him in recent weeks, per sources to @ZcohenCNN and me.

Trump's had a tenuous relationship with many Cabinet officials, but wild to see the WH refuse to say he has confidence in the Pentagon chief. "As of now, Secretary Esper is still Secretary Esper....Should [he] lose faith, we will all learn about that in the future," McEnany says.

Thank God someone with an eye on their own posterity and the well being of the country stood up to the bully.

Now he's trying to run away from something that in another context might be charged as a war crime. Trump doesn't like failure of nerve, especially when it exposes him to criticism (note that I purposely didn't say responsibility).

Mark him gone.

...not be around, and distancing himself from him.

So maybe he’s not found courage or morality so much as he’s “less scared of Drumpf than of what’s ahead if he goes along with Drumpf, once Drumpf is gone.”

compared with three who left by the end of Obama's 4th year (Gates retired from Defense, Gary Locke left Commerce to become Ambassador to China after Jon Huntsman resigned, John Bryson resigned for medical reasons), or 2 for Dubya.
