It had nothing to do with storing tobacco leaves. Any tobacco growing was hundreds of miles away. These were ordinary barns for cows, horses, hay bails, whatever. The story I was always told and had no reason to doubt was that Mail Pouch, maybe some other tobacco companies too (don't remember), would paint barns for free for letting them paint their ads on the barns. As you can see from this picture, they got a long time's worth of advertising for one barn painting.
