Seattle Seahawks HC Carroll: Kaepernick owed 'tremendous amount' for protesting racial oppression

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said the public owes a “tremendous amount” to Colin Kaepernick for raising awareness about police brutality and racial oppression by taking a knee during the playing of the national anthem before NFL games a few years ago.

“I think there was a moment in time that the young man captured, and (Kaepernick) took a stand on something,” Carroll said on the Flying Coach podcast, a show he hosts with Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr. “He figuratively took a knee, but he stood up for something he believed in. What an extraordinary moment it was that he was willing to take. I don’t think he had any idea what the impact would be as it turned out, but what a symbol of courage and vision, as he was just learning it, to do what he did.”

Carroll — speaking with Kerr and guest Gregg Poppovich, the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs — addressed Kaepernick in an hour-long conversation about race relations and the state of the country, in wake of the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man in Minneapolis.

Protests were ignited nationwide after a former Minneapolis police officer, who’s white, allegedly killed Floyd, 46, last week. The officer, Derek Chauvin, was shown in a video pinning his knee on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes, even as Floyd begged for air.

Pop and Kerr are both very well-educated and articulate liberals. Kerr is the son of a diplomat and has a very international perspective. Pop has the guts to say DUer-type things all the time. I've heard less from Carroll, but he has impressed me too. They are great and legendary as coaches also.

for the Sea Hawks. He's the perfect back-up for the mobile Russel Wilson.

racist Jordan Peterson to address his team, gives Mr Kaepernick a workout rather than just lip service.

Popovich and Kerr walk the walk.

But on this he is spot on.

I learned long ago, after realizing how imperfect I am, not to judge others by one action.

He seems like a guy who gets the struggle. As much as any of we white guys can. Which really is not much.

Had a conversation with the guy that lives across the street. Younger guy barely 40. Inherent the house from his dad who was a strong union guy from Chicago. Don’t think he is real political but know he voted for Trump last time. We had a couple of protest in our small town in Lake County Florida. Maybe 500 people. I brought it up and he shocked me! Said he was driving by and honked his support! Told me he could not imagine what it would be like to be black and America and had even schooled one of his bro’s about the situation. Said we need a change.

Yeah, I’m feeling good if nonpolitical mechanics like him are coming around.
