Redeem Kaepernick

The arrests of additional officers was a half assed gimme in view of the delays. Tomorrow or the day after the media will start to ask “what else” protesters want when this movement continues. After all, the arrests are also a pacification effort.

Kaepernick made an immeasurable personal sacrifice to prevent tragedies like Floyd’s.

When they ask what else I hope the answer is to not just apologize to Kaepernick but for the NFL to step forward and rehire him and to remove their censorship of players.

I loved what Brees said today: that when he sees the flag, he sees his two grandfathers who served in WW2 and the sacrifices they made, so he would never condone a protest during the national anthem.

One of the things he conveniently forgets is that his grandfathers served in a segregated military and the black soldiers who served came home to Jim Crow, a lack of voting rights, redlining, and a GI Bill that was far less generous to black troops than it was to whites.

But I guess he gets to have his racial amnesia if it helps him sleep well.

as long as 1500 radio stations follow limbaughs lead in lying and racist excuse-making americans can have no national fact-based discussion about this or any other major topic. most republicans and especially the trumpers/teabags are dittoheads, they live off the talk radio buzz of unchallenged repetition with fox filling in with visuals

effective left tackle in a good offensive line also. A QB just doesn't fall off the cliff and go from leading his team to the Superbowl (they probably would've won it if not for that lighting delay), and then not being an effective starting QB.

Not buying it.

It's about defensive coaching, too. Opposing teams dialed him in, exploited his weaknesses, and effectively shut him down.

To his credit, he has one hell of a rocket arm and is a pretty good scrambler. And to be fair, I was an Alex Smith fan, and was slow to warm to Colin Kaepernick. Then Bam, just as I was starting to get on board, he started going backwards. In my eyes, it was ugly watching a defeated Colin Kaepernick implode. During this decline, before that BLM stuff, people in the know were whispering 'headcase'.

It's complicated, but one could make the argument that Kaepernick's worst enemy was himself during his football days.

but if you're really up on the new, moblie QBs dominating the sport now, Jackson, Mahomes, Watson, etc., you'd know that the first wave of them was RG3, Kap and Wilson. As for Jackson you must know that Raven's coach Harbaugh had a huge challenge in his first year with Jackson as far as his passing went. His running game was great, as was Kapernick's, but his passing needed coaching. Harbaugh delivered as he designed his offensive schemes to help Jackson—multiple tight ends and hard-nosed running back complimented Jackson's talents and the rest is history.

My point is new quarterbacks need coaching just as other players do. After Kap won the job he didn't get the tailored coaching that was needed. All that mobility could've been worked into a scheme that could've had continued success but it didn't happen. It's not as if he doesn't have the arm. He's got a strong arm but needed coaching on touch. He never got it. And what quarterback doesn't need coaching? And who gives up pn a QB who got their team to a Superbowl? Failed franchises is who. The Niners are back now but they didn't have to go through that down then up cycle if they had better coaching.

But you're a Smith fan so I don't expect you to agree. And where is Smith starting and excelling now?

If Colin Kapernick was such a hot prospect, why didn't he just bide his time, ride the bench and run the clock out with the Forty-Niners, then turn free agent and land a spot with a hot team that appreciated his skill set? I understand he wanted to be traded prior to the kneeling stuff, and the 49ers shopped him around, but nobody was nibbling because of his fat player friendly contract.

With the way things shook out, one could make the argument Kapernick was his own worst enemy.

16. He isn't a very good QB.
Thu Jun 4, 2020, 02:27 AM
Jun 2020

He had about a 5 or 6 good game run and a few playoff games on top of it. But the team he went to the Super Bowl with was going to the Super Bowl that year regardless. It was one of the best defenses of the decade, and with a decent QB probably would have won that game. After that he went downhill with a really bad turnover habit. He also wanted to run way too much and it got him into a lot of trouble when teams had it figured out and planned around it.

Now he's 32 years old and hasn't played a competitive down in football for 3 or 4 years, he's absolutely done. It wasn't the kneeling, plenty of players knelt and are still playing ball today. There isn't a team in the NFL that isn't willing to take on players seen as "problems" if they think it will help them win more games. Players have literally killed people and went to jail, got out, and got back with a team. Michael Vick tortured and murdered dozens of dogs and he got back with a team.

Kap is out of the league because he wanted way more money than he was worth. He wanted paid like a top 5 QB when he had top 40 talent.

that's why he had lost his starting job to Blaine Gabbert BEFORE he ever knelt. Its why he went 11-24 as a starter his last three seasons.

Kyle Shannahan came in and knew immediately he couldn't handle the offense. I suppose he doesn't know anything about football either.

Making this "Kapernick was a great QB" argument is about the same as trying to argue that Tebow was one.

QBs like Wilson, Watson, and Newton is that they are/were effective passers who run secondary to that. Kapernick was looking to run first. He had no touch and was inaccurate. He made terrible decisions which led to interceptions, sacks, and fumbles.

Cam Newton is a fringe starter in the NFL at this point, in what world is Kapernick better than Cam?

If you were a GM, how much are you offering Kapernick? If its outside of ~20 million he's not signing with you.

and probably would've won it if not for the lighting delay (Niners were ahead). They did make the playoffs after the Super Bowl year but the coach who saw his potential and started him left. That coach's brother had a similar situation in Balltimore with Jackson and after a poor first year passing game build an offense around what he could do. It takes an idiot to say that a QB who got his team to the Super Bowl is horrible.

Again, it's apparent you know little about football.

Fri Jun 5, 2020, 11:33 PM
Jun 2020

Baltimore was up 28-6 when the power went out. Besides that, lots of awful QBs have gone to the super bowl and even won it. Without the delay the game was heading for a blowout.

Trent Dilfer, Joe Flacco, Peyton Manning at the end, Doug Williams, Brad Johnson, Rex Grossman, Jake Delhomme. None of those QBs are better than average and some were well below it.

Also, let's no get too over our skis with Lamar Jackson yet. He has had one great season, but defenses will catch up to defending the option and it was exposed in the playoffs.

The playoff win Kapernick had against Green Bay was amazing, and if he had continued that kind of level of play he would still be playing. But he didn't, he regressed heavily in the following years.

It doesn't matter how well you run or how strong your arm is. If you can't make the right read and deliver the ball accurately and on time, you can't have sustained success in the NFL. You have to throw the ball before the receiver is open with the knowledge that he will be open when the ball gets to the spot. Kapernick didnt have that. Mahomes and Wilson do.

thats true. He wasn't the worst starter at the time when he started. However, he wasn't worth what he was being paid, and he was unwilling to take less, so a lot of teams didn't bother with him. He told the XFL he wanted 20 million a season when the average QB in that league makes 250k.

Kneeling certainly made teams more weary of him, but there were lots of players who knelt and all of them kept playing and were signed to rosters. Eric Reid was just as vocal as Kapernick and he played up until being released recently and will likely be on a team next year too.

If Kap were willing to take backup money and compete for the job, he'd have been signed. Its not as easy as saying Kap is an upgrade over X, so Y should sign him. You have to consider his salary demands and what other players have to be cut to take on the money over what the replacement QB gets.
