How can we withstand five more months of this?

And take his little dog Pence with him.
He won't, but putting the pressure on might make him blow sooner.

(12,538 posts)In addition to the lawsuit he'll immediately file with the SCOTUS to throw out the results of the election, he'll be even more unhinged than he's been ever since the GOP Senate told him, "Do whatever you want. We've got your back." At the very least, Moscow Mitch will be keeping the Senate in session 24/7 to approve another 100-plus lifetime federal judgeships. Trump will get a cramp in is hand from signing so many executive orders. The first one will turn all public lands over to private interests for development and exploitation. And God knows how much pressure will be put on RBG to retire so Fat Donnie gets to appoint one more justice.
Of course, he'll use Bill Barr to go after every person he perceives as an enemy. If Fat Donnie can't lock someone up, he can at least bankrupt them with the legal fees associated with defending themselves.

(19,549 posts)The only good thing about all of this is Trump's response, not to mention his teargassing law abiding Americans, is blowing up in his face. As it should.
I suspect he'll escalate more before he's gone, but I'm more hopeful he'll be gone than I was a month ago.

(91,946 posts)an integral part of the country since its inception, and the majority have had enough
George Floyd has awaken an ugly part of America that many have ignored far too long. That along with the pandemic, and unemployment I believe are the catalyst that will start to usher in the change that is so desperately needed, and November will be the first step toward that change

(4,968 posts)does not have to wait until November. I am wondering if some people understand what needs to change. Our political situation is just not as important as our societal situation, as these protests will attest to. (I don't remember protests on this scale when Trump won the election, nor do I remember seeing any protests of this magnitude over the crap he has done since. (Yes, there were protests, but not to this level). Stupid politicians are a dime a dozen, but our political structure has checks and balances. Our modern society is rather wide open when it comes to that idea, but seldom does it make it into practice. If you want this shit to never happen again, things are going to have to change within our culture, and I see little to no effort on that front. What is happening around the globe may spark something, but I am concerned about here in the US, where I hear talk all the time, but see little action. Until now. Let's see if it really begets change, or become just another video moment that will be swept under the rug by next week.

(91,946 posts)Senate, which has a republican party which has sold its soul to the devil, it will be difficult at the National Level to get things moving.
Your skepticism is understandable based on past history, and to some degree I share that skepticism, but I prefer to look at the potential for real change to happen this time

But, yeah, it's gonna SUCK for awhile.

(17,000 posts)We had some decent electoral news over the last couple of days. Let's keep building on that.
New York is having a special election on June 23rd, their Primary Day, to fill the seat left vacant when republican crook Chris Collins was convicted of insider trading from the White House lawn.
Democrat / Working Families Party candidate Nate McMurray is a strong and outspoken candidate who came within .37% of beating Collins in the 2018 election. He's built a strong and loyal grassroots ground game. He's got what it takes to change Western New York from Carl Paladino country to an enduring Democratic district. I'm thousands of miles from his district, but I've adopted him as my candidate to push.
McMurray will be a strong and active member of the House of Representatives, and his representation will generate strong Democratic loyalty in a district long dominated and neglected by republicans.
Our support will help build the social / political structure we need to recover from 50+ years of republican abuse.

(442 posts)...he will cause damage; plenty of damage. None of it irreversible or unfixable.
It will take years, maybe a decade or more, to repair the damage. I could be gone by then, but think about the world we could leave behind. I don't have gkids, might never have any, but someone does. Someone's gkids will hopefully benefit from our actions.
I was thinking about this yesterday. Maybe Trump really is the 'best president ever'. Look at how he's bound us together, look at how his openly racist and bigoted views have forced so many on both sides to say, "ENOUGH!". I'm watching diehard Republicans post "I can't breathe" on Twitter and FB. I'm seeing corporations tell whining babies to fuck off when the companies post in support for BLM.
It's tough to be optimistic, right now, but I think there is a bright future ahead.

(14,543 posts)he is a system, a Frankenstein unleashed on the world.
But, what created him, the "conservative movement" and Republican Party will still be IF we can get him out of the white house.
See, Tom Cotton NYTs column, and this is one of their supposed 'stars." You have a couple hundred like him in congress, thousands more at the state level.
See ... well, thousands and thousands of scumbags making a good living selling all the lies and fantasies of conservatism that roughly half this country greedily laps up.

(1,603 posts)not so much about Trump anymore. At this point most of America sees it's either Trump goes bye bye, or the country goes bye bye. I'm more concerned with the question can America rebound. I think so, but I have strong doubts.

(73,308 posts)I share those concerns. It seems most likely that things will continue to deteriorate at an increasing pace between now and November -- and continue to do so until January 20, 2021. This is painful.

(220 posts)And I am not talking about Trump. As much as I hate to think about it and as sad as it makes me I think in less than 2 years there will not be a United States. Trump will not leave office peacefully. There will be some form of a civil war. At least 5 states will secede from the Union. Luckily those States (Calif., Washington State, some of the richer farm states. They will form into a Union much like the European Union. Their combined GDP that will be multiple times what is left for Trump.
Trump is not smart enough to pull this off but Steve Bannon and Bill Barr are.
But in less than 10 years Humpty Dumty will have picked up the pieces and put the states that didn't like living under a dictatorship back together. We might have to draft a new constitution but we have a good document to follow. We should be able to make it even better just because of the things we have learned over the last 200 [;id years .
I turn 78 in just a few months and won't be around long enough to see Humpdy Dumpty fall of much less see which side breaks into pieces. I hope it will be Trump that is Humty Dumpty. If it is I think Joe Biden and the crew that he can put together WILL put us on the right path in less than 2 years. For that I hope I will still be around to see it and be a part of it.

(12,408 posts)In each of our neighborhoods, cities, counties, states we need to do all we can to make things better. Volunteering for organizations that are making peoples lives easier, participating in voter registration, as best we will be able, and taking an active role in whatever is needed for poll staffing. Do not spread conspiracies re voting issues. Encourage all the people you can to vote in any manner they are able to. Write letters or email congressional reps when they need to hear from us.
We were the majority in the last elections and we will end our nations night mare together.
