China: US proves that Tiananmen Square massacre was necessary

'Most extreme response': China commentary roasts US over protests

China's state-run tabloid Global Times wrote on Wednesday ... that the US was preparing to commemorate Tiananmen in a "unique way" - by dispatching the military against protesters.

The US is proving the importance for China to restore order in 1989," Hu wrote.

Over the past week, Chinese officials and state media have revelled in drawing comparisons between the unrest in the US and last year's massive demonstrations in Hong Kong.

State media have been plastered with photos of crowds clashing with police, while officials called out Washington on its history of cheering anti-Beijing protests.

"Why did the US have so many problems with the restrained and civilised way of law enforcement by the Hong Kong police but have no problem at all with threatening to shoot at and mobilising the National Guard against its domestic protesters?" Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said on Monday.

"This double-standard way of behaving is so typical of the US," he added.

in terms of the double standard.

It’s very obvious and apparent.

Thanks, Republicans.

I have a lot of Chinese friends, ages 25-35, who didn’t even know anything had happened 31 years ago until they came here.

Chinese censorship and propaganda is no joke.

When the local military wouldn’t shoot their own, they brought in units from far away.

The words of the Chinese leader 31 years ago parallel those of Trump the past few days.

Sad. Sad when the Chinese have to be the voice of the grown ups on the global stage.

They aren't incorrect.

An old interview with Donald Trump in Playboy magazine from 1990 has re-surfaced due to his controversial comments about Tiananmen square.

When the now-Republican presidential frontrunner was asked his impression of the Soviet Union, the then-43-year-old replied:

I was very unimpressed... Russia is out of control and the leadership knows it. That's my problem with Gorbachev. Not a firm enough hand.

He was asked whether he meant a "firm hand as in China?", to which Trump replied:

When the students poured into Tiananmen Square, the Chinese government almost blew it. Then they were vicious, they were horrible, but they put it down with strength. That shows you the power of strength. Our country is right now perceived as weak... as being spit on by the rest of the world.
