Little more than a week after the Cooper video went viral and in the middle of national protests over systemic racism white New York restaurateur Svitlana Flom called police multiple times on a black woman sitting on an Upper West Side Manhattan park bench, alleging harassment and threats against her child.
A series of Instagram posts by user @_brownsugarbaby (the recipient of Floms wrath), dont show anything of the sort. What they show is an entitled white woman appalled at not getting her way and willing to summon shock troops away from escalating civil unrest until she gets it.

Yes, Flom actually said: Shes playing the black card.
Flom alleges the video was selectively edited to make her look racist. But its pretty clear that she was in no physical danger while making her 911 calls. Her husband walks away from the encounter in apparent mortification while her child plays on a scooter, seemingly carefree, nearby.
This is not what danger looks like.
Danger is not someone sitting calmly on a park bench recording you with their cellphone. Danger is not feeling comfortable enough to sit feet away from your supposed menace, crossing your legs and waiting for police to arrive.

(251 posts)Just because there is a bit of kumbaya over this Minnesota tragedy, unfortunately, isn't going to wipe out how people have been thinking for a long time.
We tend to project our own attitudes on others and that is a mistake, IMO.

(54,299 posts)However, the more these people get shamed publicly, the more the whole practice looks foolish. This only ends when the callers know for a fact that they risk being publicly made to look foolish, and their names spread all over the internet. They fear that even more than they fear black folks sitting on park benches.

Lots of women are NOT that way, of course, but some of them are pretty awful shit-stirrers.

(15,315 posts)On what planet? The same cops who brutalize black people will never take the word of any woman, regardless of race, over a white man. Pretending that the issue of police brutality against black people is all on white women lets white men, by far the bigger problem, off the hook.

(6,133 posts)Im white and feel most comfortable with black people because they are really nice and have common sense, which is devoid of people like that woman.
Im in the minority of older white people, and my wife, but my kids are great, and so are many young.
It should have happened in the 80s when I was in my 20s, but lets see it happen now. Racists suck.

There were a lot of cultural differences that I didn't understand, which they thought was hilarious.
"He didn't know that wasn't her real hair! Ha ha!"
Edit:
Another strange phenomenon, for me, was using Mr. and Ms. in front of the first names -- e.g., "Thank you, Ms. Rebecca." I thought, "Am I in Alabama now?" I just did what they did.
The shootings in that neighborhood compelled me to leave eventually. The coworkers were fine.

(15,315 posts)It's yet another thread giving a pass to white men, pretending that they aren't doing the same thing at a higher rate. White women who are racist aren't racists because they're women. They're racist because they're white. It's also all to common a way for white people to pretend that some other group are the racist ones. Then they don't have to examine their own racism quite so much.

She felt so threatened that she stuck around the threat, even though she had amply opportunity to leave. Go home, Karen.
