A vast number of you still believe that Donald Trump was chosen by God to lead the nation.
If that was your Gods plan, why did He choose someone He knew would be exposed repeatedly as a liar, a bigot, a cheat, and an incompetent buffoon who would be reviled the world over?
If you believe that your God is all-knowing, surely He foresaw that his chosen one would fail every test of his ability to lead from the California wildfires, to hurricanes in Puerto Rico, to the events in Charlottesville, to the response to Covid-19, and now to the massive protests against racial injustice and fail so spectacularly.
Why would your God anoint an idiot who stands against everything that Jesus Christ stood for like sheltering the homeless, feeding the hungry, caring for the sick, comforting the dying?
Does your God just have it in for America? Is His choice of Trump to lead us just an example of that divine sense of humour that is His, and His alone?
Perhaps Trump was a test not of him, but of you. Maybe your God wanted to see just who among you was willing to abandon the tenets of your faith in order to follow the fat Golden Calf the one who promised to rid the country of all the people you dont like.
If that was the test, guess what, Evangelicals? Youve failed just as spectacularly as your anointed-by-God pResident" continues to do on a daily basis.
Oh, in answer to the question posed, you can find your Messiah cowering in the WH, 'inspecting' the bunker and having the police clear the way of protestors before having the guts to show his face in public - but that's the way your God wanted it, right?

(14,168 posts)I guess I was lucky. In my teens I began to become aware and be put off by the blind acceptance, the group think in my church. I began to question things like the big differences and contradictions between morals allowed in the old testament and those in the new testament. ie. Surround cities, rape and pillage, in God's name, vs. turn the other cheek in the New.
I began to understand how many went to church to be told what to believe, rather than discover truth by their own experiences.
How the way they, including my relatives, regarded anyone outside their evangelical community with suspicion and prejudice. But what was worse is how they pasted on smiles and swore on the Good Book that they loved everyone equal....as Jesus did. But deep down, there was a kind of arrogance that they were always in the right of course, and better because of it.
How it actually made them uncomfortable with stories on some figure in the secular world, or another religion, like Gandhi, or Nelson Mandela if it looked like they were praised for actions that helped their fellow man/womankind for actions taken and good results happen without it involving their version of God.
I wondered why, if Jesus is the Great Peacemaker, the peace movement, and the long haired hippies that supported those ideals, were the "sinners", and leaders only had to use God's name in their speeches and be applauded for sending in police to crack some heads.
I found books that made me think in a more relatable way than the Bible did. Three books that changed my thinking back then, Steppenwolf, Breakfast of Champions, and Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.
All that to say I understand perfectly. They are conditioned to accept more than one reality or morality at once. Bad can be good. And Good can be bad. As well they preach humbleness and not caring what the world thinks, but yet they seethe at being treated by some movies and shows (like Flanders in the Simpsons) as idiots. One reason for the push by Robertson and others to break one of Jesus's instructions to separate away from politics, "give unto Caesar..." and try to force Biblical laws on their communities by running for office. I now regard Christianity as a cult like any other. Some are just more fundamental than others. I see the more "liberal" ones as giving shade to the more extreme ones, because of the undefined grey line connecting them.

(17,187 posts)they can't quote even one Bible passage because Jesus never said one thing about it
I have had conversations with Christian Republicans about why they support Trump. I point out the fact that Trump is a lying, greedy, self-centered, racist, sexist moron---the complete opposite of Jesus. "So why support such a man?", I ask They will usually hem and haw and grudgingly admit that Trump "isn't perfect" but then will say "But he is nominating conservative Judges to the court!" That's ALL they care about! They want Judges who will be pro-corporate, ban abortion and eliminate gay and Trans rights. Nothing else matters to them. They want their version of "Biblical morality" to be the law of the land. To hell with kids in cages, or environmental destruction, the crushing of minority rights and the rule of law--I could go on and on. They don't care. They are so myopic and selfish that it is maddening. So they will support this monster to the bitter end.
Oh and as an aside when I talk about how terrible Trump is they often counter with, "But Hillary would have been MUCH worse!" Yeah---right. Idiots.

(2,578 posts)I realize that others mileage may vary, but from my viewpoint, none of those religions have anything at all to offer to women. They promote sexism (grab 'em by the pussy), classism (tax cuts for the rich), racism (dark is evil, light is good, and the ongoing attacks against POC), homophobia (using old testament injunctions to discriminate against and hassle or even kill LGBTQ, assault and destruction of the earth's life support systems (multiply... and conquer and subdue), bigotry (defined as excess loyalty to ones own group i.e. only they are loved by their creator, everyone else is wrong and therefore damned), etc., as nauseum. It is obvious that their particular deity is Mammon, with huge heaping sides of hate and violence thrown in. Oh, and let's not forget the giant serving of conceit. They are promoting what many have rightly named Republican/Supply -side Jesus. The rest of us need to resist this toxic and appalling agenda with every ounce of strength that we have. Remember in November, Vote! Flush the Turd on November 3rd.

(201 posts)My whole family was flabbergasted, said Benjamin Horbowy, 37.
The Horbowys had gathered in Tallahassee, Florida, to watch live as Trump walked from the White House to St Johns. My mother just shouted out, God give him strength! Hes doing a Jericho walk!
A Jericho walk, in some evangelical circles, refers to the biblical book of Joshua, where God commanded the Israelites to walk seven times around the opposing city of Jericho, whose walls then came crashing down.

After watching Trumps gesture, Horbowy changed his Facebook profile photo to one of Trump outside St Johns, with added rays of light emanating from the Bible. It was the coolest thing he could do. What more could he do, wear blue jeans and ride in on a horse? he said.

As the [Guardian] piece says, Horbowy is running for Floridas State Senate from District 3.
