https://www.politico.com/news/2020/06/04/police-groups-joe-biden-300222Joe Biden has long prided himself on being a union-friendly Democrat with a good relationship with rank-and-file cops.
But Bidens call for more national policing reforms and oversight in the wake of the death of George Floyd and the perception that he hasnt shown enough solidarity with law enforcement amid the ensuing nationwide protests and unrest have created a fissure with law enforcement groups, leaving many who once supported him frustrated by what they regard as political posturing by their one-time ally.
.................................
What I think is going on is more like Police unions are against any sort of reform or rooting out of its bad core.
Police unions don't want any oversight as it would shine a great big light on the abuses that have gone on for years.
You would think they would welcome some sort of review but as soon as someone wants to, they start screaming....so what conclusion does that make me come to, that its perhaps rotten to the core in places and don't want the box opened.
Update.....

(58,785 posts)And Biden has always supported the needs of law enforcement.
Like all issues, this one plays out differently in different situations in different eras -- affected above all by the will of the electorate -- but personal decency and principles remain the same. Or don't exist at all.
Also agree with Sunonmars. After a while, well-meaning organizations virtually always degrade to a primary purpose of promoting and preserving themselves above all. Unions historically spectacularly so.
I don't think in this setting it will hurt Biden in the least. 73% of Americans support righteous demonstrations against murder by police in well over 100 cities nationally! These groups are on the wrong side of history. These groups' leaders should be taking a knee, not pandering to the angry, heavily RW reactionaries among them to keep their jobs.

And fuck them. Biden calls for policing reforms after a video of yet another blatant police murder gets out. And they resist the idea that they need to reform? How disgusting can humans be?

which really aren't unions - just thug enforcers - don't you love democracy
Repugs will do anything to destroy unions especially public employees unions particularly teachers. But all their anti-union garbage somehow excludes police unions. Because they know many if not most LEOs are RWNJs.

(315 posts)It isn't just law enforcement unions that are tolerant of racism, but autoworkers, fire, sanitation, etc.
Leadership is often white even if the unions have African-American members. The difference is that the law enforcement union members have guns and are tolerant of murder.

(24,259 posts)truly wanted to protect all of the good ones and attract more of them then they would back Biden who wants reform and stop protecting the bad ones who are obviously a huge problem.
The fact is that 'bad cops' harm and even kill members in the communities that they're sworn to protect. Their toxic behaviour taints all law enforcement members and actually puts the good ones at a higher risk of harm and death from angry citizens. If good ones and the police unions don't break down the 'blue wall', speak out and take a stand against the bad and the admin and system protecting them then in this case, "silence is complicity" and respect and trust in the profession will be further eroded.
( "Break with Biden"? Huh? I don't remember them backing Biden or Dems the last election so how can they "break"?)

(6,908 posts)Police unions are labor unions to unite employees for negotiating better working conditions for the rank-and-file. They are not political PACs to endorse strongmen politicians.
(Union member and former-officer for over 25 years)
Combining strength for political purposes is a gang and not a labor union.

A union card for cops is a get out of jail free card.
NY cops had a Union slow down years ago. Few tickets or arrest. Crime went down by 20% during their slow down. Its like they cause 20% of the crime by doing their job.

(15,298 posts)Looking at the headline, I expected to see a bunch of official statements from law enforcement organizations condemning Biden. That's what the fucking headline implied.
What did I find instead?
A couple of worthless dudes quoted as saying nothing but fucking fluff.
No official statement from law enforcement.
No official endorsement of Donnie Shit for Brains.
No written statement denouncing Biden.
No Union election result saying they denounce Biden.
There's fucking nothing in the entire fucking article that would warrant that headline. Just a couple of people saying; "oh, I think he (Biden) risks losing police organizations if he goes too far" and a couple of quotes from some random Retrumplican candidate for some fucking council seat in Dumbfuckistan Murika.
Of course, at the end, they do throw in some quotes from Val Deming, as if that's enough to give " balance" to this bullshit Retrumplican propaganda piece.
It's as if the RNC or Donnie Shit for Brains reelection campaign wrote it and politico just slapped their logo on it.
FUCK POLITICO!

(32,641 posts)Only a small percentage of cops are bad they say. Every cop there when when a Black man was killed was a bad cop. That is 100% of them.

(6,804 posts)Labor unions tend to protect the exclusivity of their members. Not the best workers but the most loyal or connected. They're often unavailable to newcomers.
LEO unions tend to protect their members from accountability. Not a situation conducive to personal responsibility. They close ranks, promoting nondisclosure.
Both are devolutional, the unwanted consequences of broad brushes covering complexities.

(1,737 posts)We see what they're about and I'm happy Biden is taking them to task. That would not be a loss. Many have been trending right since black people started speaking out against police brutality, and the inception of black lives matter (to which they created blue lives matter), way before Biden became our nominee. Biden will be ok.
Many police officers are not in denial of systematic racism, in fact, many black officers are dealing with racism within the police force. Many will vote for Biden. I have a few officers in my family and some friends, they're all Biden supporters.

(193 posts)Joe Biden has shown true leadership here, the support of the police unions be damned!
He knows the police unions have turned a blind eye to the abuse many cops have thrown on minorities and he knows that they need to evolve. It's long past time that these unions recognize that they have a responsibility for good policing and to the communities they serve. Not just to their rank and file.
