It jumped lots of lines today. The Pole Creek Fire was 7000 acres this morning, 15,000 acres by 6 PM PDT.
Thirty minutes before official sunset, I heard wilderness rangers and FPOs (forest protection officers) going back on duty for the day/night at critical trails (Green Lakes and Broken Top). Not good. Trails and camp sites must be in danger.

(14,887 posts)beautiful. It is also scary once you know what it is. I am always fascinated by the wind patterns revealed with pictures of smoke rising from fires.

(3,911 posts)Significant fire growth on the north and south flanks on the Pole Creek Fire occurred yesterday and last night. Containment actions today along the 16 Road (Three Creeks Road) and Forest Service 1018 Road consisted of creating new containment lines and conducting burnouts. The fire now spans 15,000 acres.
Residents in the Crossroads and Edgington/Remuda areas remain under a Level 2, pre-evacuation alert (west of the 16 Road and South of Highway 20 in the vicinity of Sisters):
· Dangerous conditions exist - be prepared to leave at a moment's notice.
· Public safety agencies will keep public updated about when to leave and which routes to take.
· Persons with special needs or in need of assistance should be moved at this time.
· Large animals should be moved at this time.
In the event that there is a need for evacuation, citizens in affected areas will receive a call from 911 Dispatch with a recorded message with specific evacuation information. To receive these messages on cell phones, citizens are encouraged to visit http://www.deschutes.org//citizensalerts and register their numbers with the Citizen Alert program. At this time, there are no towns, subdivisions or structures under immediate threat of evacuation.
For firefighter and public safety, the current closure area includes the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) between Trail #3531and the PCT Trailhead on Highway 242. Information will be posted at all trailheads and access points from Elk Lake Trailhead north to Santiam Pass. PCT hikers will have a reroute option using the Scott Trail traveling west to Highway 242.
The closure still includes Forest Roads 15 & 16 (Three Creeks Rd); spur roads, trailheads and Three Creeks Campground area. It now also includes an extension of FR 370 to FR 4601. Closed roads are signed, barricaded, and/or staffed to advise the public of the closure. Maps and closure descriptions are available at Deschutes National Forest offices and online at http://inciweb.org/incident/3244/.

(10,642 posts)...hope they get a handle on it soon.
There are 2 or 3 fires by Yakima, Ellensburg and Wenatchee...we're getting smoke in Seattle. We've only had .2" rain in the last 6 weeks and none expected until the end of the month. I can imagine how dry it is on the east side of the Cascades.
Don't know if you saw this: http://www.democraticunderground.com/11031632

(8,554 posts)We didn't even get that .2" last Monday that those further south saw...barely 2 inches of rain since June and all of that fell before July 22. It's so damned dry up here, we've got elk drinking from my birdbath.
It is one frightening fire season!

(146,286 posts)There's a Pole Creek in my old California home town, where my 88-year-old parents still live.
I hope this one gets under control, but am glad it's not near my parent.

(11,648 posts)I have circumnavigated the Three Sisters several times. My daughter did it last year and one of my favorite bike rides is Hwy 242 before they open the snow gates. But fire is part of the cycle. Stay safe - we don't want to lose any lives.
