She stood up for blacklisted artists and writers in the 1950's and supported Adelai Stevenson....LOVE HER (as evidenced by my avatar ) )

She started out as a model and ended up in Hollywood. Iirc, "To Have or Have Not" was her first movie and she was something like 19 at the time. She talks about how sexually naive she was and how she was supposed to portray this sex siren on the screen. Her signature look, that head down, low voice thing, she said was her trying to keep from the camera picking up on her physically shaking (from fright).

Olivia DeHavilland, Joan Fontaine etc etc etc

They were larger than life then and they remain so today.
