Romneys Character Comes To Light, And Its Dark Indeedby Cynthia Tucker
Character is a combination of traits that etch the outlines of a life, governing moral choices and infusing personal and professional conduct. Its an elusive thing, easily cloaked or submerged by the theatrics of a presidential campaign, but unexpected moments can sometimes reveal the fibers from which it is woven.
Last week, Mitt Romney had just such a moment. His rash, crass and blatantly dishonest response to violent protests in Libya and Egypt exposed a feckless and contemptible character that places political advantage above patriotism and values winning at any cost over courage, honor and truth.
As mobs attacked U.S. embassies in the Middle East, Romney rushed to use the moment as a cudgel against his rival, President Obama. He might have waited to find out whether any diplomats had been injured or Marines attacked. He did not. He might have waited until a day of mourning in commemoration of national tragedy 9/11 was over. He did not.
Instead, as violence escalated and lives hung in the balance, Romney jarringly condemned the president, claiming that the administrations first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks. Later, he stood by that lie, contending that Obama coddles and apologizes to the nations enemies. His shamelessness overshadowed his belated attempts to acknowledge the deaths of four courageous Americans including Christopher Stevens, U.S. ambassador to Libya who gave their lives in service to their country . . .
In truth, Romneys shamelessness and shallowness have been on display for years, evident in his falsehoods, his hypocrisy and his spinelessness. He has no apparent political principles that he will not jettison if circumstances seem to dictate a change in ideology . . .

(5,519 posts)and it struck me as really weird that Mitt's endorsers were mainly his wife and his son, Tagg. I suppose Rafalca would have commented that he likes Mitten's support, but he's no Mr. Ed. They had relatively few bad things to say about him... because they were married to him or conceived by him?
They were a little hard on President Obama, I thought, but he had many more non-family endorsers, (they didn't even interview Michelle) and many more actual achievements Even Boenher remarked that he liked The President.

(19,458 posts)It's rather striking. There are NO photos of Romney with other people, like friends. No pics of him paling around with anyone at all. I have a feeling that he truly IS as unlikable as he appears. Where are his friends????
The President, on the other hand, has friends. And the beautiful thing about the President's friends, is that they're all over the board when it comes to lifestyle, income, interests, etc.

(14,177 posts)In contrast to Obama where the more stories come out about him the more I like him. Even the trivial little things like when Michelle says he likes guacamole and chips as his favorite snack. It's really bad for you. Mitt he likes peanut butter sandwiches and chocolate milk, really even his favorite snack is boring.
In my experience when I have heard someone is bad news it's usually an understatement. When I hear someone is great person, it may or may not be an exaggeration. I think that Romney is probably much worse. Obama probably isn't a saint.

(30,058 posts)The only things I have seen consistant is he is running for president and wants to cut his taxes. Then he carries through with his plan to select Lyin Ryan. He is a throw away candidate, the repubs knew in 2008 and again in 2012 Bush has messed up so much they could not beat a Democrat and there smart candidates did not even try.

(8,954 posts)The late 60's chickenhawk who sought asylum from the military draft in France posing as a "missionary", The moderate albeit "severely conservative" former governor of Massachusetts, the senatorial candidate who positioned himself as being "to the left of Ted Kennedy", the serial flip-flopper, the retroactively retired corporate raider who later decried the 2009 auto industry bailout, the "rescuer" of the SLC Olympics who pulled it off with a massive federal cash infusion, the wannabee come-lately Tea Party cheerleader and birther apologist, or the secretive don't ask me about my offshore bank accounts or tax returns Mitt Romney? Yeah, we're just dying to know which one of these is "real", but the title of shallow opportunist works just fine for him.

I haven't liked him since I first saw him; something in the man's body language just put me off. Of course, I had that reaction to Harper, too.

(82,383 posts)It's interesting how many stories we've heard. From old friends and even his family. The hair cutting, the dog on the roof, eating first at family dinners and finishing before some people even started, driving Ann home from her date with another guy, walking the blind professor into a door, putting the kids' face in butter, tripping the daughter-in-law to win a race, dressing up as a policeman.
We know this guy well and we know he's an asshole.

(25,415 posts)I disliked his policies and views (the ones that were very far to the right. Rombot version 1000). But now I just dislike him as a person. The more I learn the stranger and weirder and unlikable the man gets. Same with Ryan. Contrast to Obama and Biden who seem so human and likable.

(82,383 posts)Dubya with his dorkiness could be just a little bit likeable in spite of being the puppet of the evil Cheney. Falling off the scooter, walking into the door or just being drunk. That's at least human, if a stupid human. The Mittbot is just creepy.

It is the campaign's job to present the candidate to us.
So how much are they being paid?

(17,651 posts)There was a post around here last week that seemed to nail it.
Mitt wants to be in control, the CEO, of his own campaign. Something to do with his narcissistic personality and humongous ego getting in the way of political commonsense.
