McCain Offers Defense Of Romneys Response To Embassy Attacks
Sen. John McCain offered some defense of Mitt Romney's response to the attacks in Libya and Egypt earlier this week by criticizing the statement put out by the U.S. embassy in Cairo ahead of the protests that erupted Tuesday in an interview on CBS' "Face the Nation." Romney has come under fire for misstating the facts and attacking President Obama before all the facts of the attacks were known.
"If you look at the statement that was given by the American embassy and later disavowed by the administration itself, of course that was a very weak statement," McCain said in response to questions about the appropriateness of Romney's statement. "It was a semi-apology. We shouldn't be apologizing for freedom of speech."
McCain also blamed the press for criticism Romney has received over the statement. "So the lack of symmetry on the part of the media in this campaign on this issue and on Medicare and others is just saddening to me," McCain said.
