President Barack Obamas mother was posthumously baptized by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on June 4, 2008. Thats the day after Obama won enough delegates to get the Democratic nomination. Graphic below of the LDS information regarding her:

Besides that, it's downright creepy.
And I imagine Ann Dunham spinning in her grave at the thought!

(12,288 posts)She was not of their faith, deceased and no family member gave approval. So...it is just abusive posturing....Maybe our Pagan friends could counter this with Romney...Oh, wait...the Pagans have standards....never mind.

(3,709 posts)While I am not religious, I respect other peoples beliefs, but what gives the Mormon Church the right to make a decision like this for anyone, especially those who can no longer speak for themselves.
I find the action of posthumously baptizing whomever they choose to be despicable.

(62,444 posts)It's a silly practice, but I'm always fascinated by those who find it offensive.
If a Christian prays "May God have mercy upon him" at the funeral of a Hindu, is that offensive?
The problem with Mormons is that they, apparently unlike other religions, believe their religion is true.

(26,624 posts)people say even though it's a tremendous burden when they have little to say but take forever to say it.
I reread often the Desiderata and each time it becomes more meaningful:
Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be critical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy.

(7,160 posts)They do this to a lot of famous people George Carlin was one of them Mother Theresa, All the Popes, It's just disrespectful sick shit. I wonder if Mitt was ever a proxy for these posthumous ceremonies?
braddy
(3,585 posts)has fulfilled all of such temple duties, and the duties of his office, from baptism of the dead, to excommunicating people from the church.
Mitt is no ordinary church goer.

(75,480 posts)motive is naive and heartfelt. I had a friend from high school, who became a nurse. As it happened she ended up working with my mom in a children's clinic at UCLA. My mother called me up one evening to tell me that she was upset over something my friend had done. Apparently, a very sick child died while in the care of said friend. The friend baptized her post-mortem even though the family wasn't Catholic. For those who don't know, any Catholic can baptize a dying or recently passed person, who has expressed the desire for baptism or if an infant, the guardians have expressed such a desire, if there isn't enough time to get a priest.
My mother was rightfully upset because there hadn't been any kind of that consent. When she scolded my friend for doing it my friend could only reply that she wanted the child to go to heaven. It was still wrong and my mother was right to tell her it was wrong, however, I really understand where my friend's heart was.

(7,768 posts)Did they "baptize" Barack's deceased father too? No? Wonder why?
The LDS is a bunch of creepy fuckers. Remember they also did this to Ann Romney's ATHEIST father and she allowed it.
I believe that Mittens played a part in that too.
Bunch of weirdo cultists. Yuk.

(53,012 posts)because of this practice they have of baptizing the dead. For more than a century they have gone around the globe gathering information on people and keep them in their archives. All of their reading rooms are open to the public and a great source for historians. I personally don't care if they baptize me after I'm dead. It has no effect on anything. I suppose I might feel differently if I hadn't used their archives, but that's the context I put it in.

(24,324 posts)I usually don't care what people 'believe'--which means what they sure as hell HOPE is true, with absolutely no evidence. That's their business.
2- Baptism used to have a real meaning,centuries ago..Now it means nothing, and especially in Mormonism it is just an ignorant joke.. So I don't think Obama's mom has anything to worry about. :>
I live near Palmyra, NY where every summer they hold the Hill Cumorah Pageant. This is some kind of re-enactment of Joe Smith blah blah. I went once just for kicks . One of the most stupid commercial things I have ever seen. I also went through the "Museum" one day. Some old fart showed my Chinese wife and I around. We saw the magic glasses by which Smith could translate some magic writing. The old guide showed his racist xenophobia by clearly indicating that my wife, being a "Communist" would never go to heaven. DUH !!
She told him she was not a Communist but a Tibetan Buddhist. He then blanched and immediately ushered us out of the place, Fuck Mormons. Sorry.. can't help it..
The whole thing is just a joke.

(28,581 posts)So they wrote down some name and said a few words to their alien overlord. I doubt the President's mother or the President would even give this a second thought.
It's like every time a christian tells me they will "pray for me". I always walk away thinking " lol... you go ahead and pray all you want."
