California Rodeo Announcer’s Racist Michelle Obama Joke

It always boils down to skin color with these right-wing assholes. Sometimes it's couched in language like not being "Anglo-Saxon" enough. Sometimes it's not...

A racist joke about First Lady Michelle Obama made by a California rodeo announcer over the PA system on Saturday has sparked considerable controversy.

During the Creston Classic Rodeo in Creston, Ca., the announcer reportedly joked over the loudspeaker that “Playboy is offering Ann Romney $250,000 to pose in the magazine, and the White House is upset about it because National Geographic only offered Michelle Obama $50 to pose for them.”

Another rodeo is planned in Santa Barbara county and is going to feature bull fights of the no kill variety, however, bull fights are still cruel even when you don't torment and kill the bull. Also, they are very dangerous. It's a form that dates from Bronze Age Crete and maybe it's time we so-called civilized people need to put barbaric practices and entertainment to rest.

Up until the 70s or so NatGeo was (in)famous for its photos of bare-breasted or otherwise seminude non-western women (Japanese pearl divers, people in Amazon tribes where nobody wore much, that sort of thing), almost a sort of quasi-covert soft porn. Or at least that's how it was used by several decades-worth of teenaged American (white) boys.

It's not as if he tested it in focus groups. I think it was more just his notion of a "subtle" dig.

The main reason I called attention to it was to make sure it didn't go over any heads on our end. That's the part that takes it past "crude and sexist" (which it is too, right up front) into explicitly racial.

On edit: I want to clearly state that it's just as bad for the sexism as the racism. The only difference between the two here is that the sexism is so open and up front it's easier to miss the specific racial dig, especially if you don't know that bit of context.

Creston is in the "North County" of San Luis Obispo County. The Congressman for that area is Kevin McCarthy (R) whom you might recall as one of the attendees at the infamous meeting where the Republicans decided to derail, deflect, block, and destroy, anything the President tries to do in his first term. So this does not surprise me at all from that area. I lived in that party of the County, and my daughter attended the public schools there. I recall one of the teachers at the public school held a bible study at lunch in her classroom. It's right wing, with a lot of rich ranchers, and play cowboys. Hated living up that way.. the bumper stickers alone were enough to make you cry.

this is how they think. It's discouraging. There are nice people around here too, but it's the rancher, horsey crowd that are this bigoted and they don't even think they are. I went on two dates with a local guy and I couldn't take the conversation anymore about Mexicans and queers, etc., etc. so I cut the second date short. When I told him, I couldn't tolerate his racism anymore he was truly surprised that I thought he was racist and sure, he couldn't stand queers. No one can and he couldn't understand why I would.

...send a letter off to the President asking if this type of behavior and language is normal for their "family" event. Hoping for a response.
