Romney's debate problems start with himself
" Romney's first problem is the debate he's having with himself on one issue after another. On each major issue, he needs to decide which one of his various positions he will advance in the debates. That is a nightmare no candidate should be faced with, but one that Romney has made necessary: he has to debate himself first.
Romney's second problem is deciding how much or little to lie. I have never before seen a presidential candidate lie so casually and often on the campaign trail. Does he dare risk those lies with the nation watching? With reporters and fact-checkers eager to pounce and publicize every lie as a lie? With the possibility President Obama will have to chronically correct him and embarrass him before the nation? President Obama has the advantage of having campaigned using honest numbers and facts concerning the issues. He will be able to take many of his road-tested arguments straight into the debate. Romney will not. I imagine Romney will try to clean up his act some for the debates, which means he's faced with learning or remembering a whole raft of different numbers and facts he's not used to talking about on the campaign trail. Keeping the new truths separate from his practiced lies will prove challenging and confusing, at best, and may prove impossible. "
