Just reminded me of my Senior high school SB.. We took a bus trip to Glenwood Springs, Colorado. It's in the mountains and they have Hot Springs!

I loved snorkeling at Hanauma Bay.... But no one told me about the razor sharp coral. I come strutting out in my little pink bikini with blood running down my legs and arms from tiny cuts......ah, good times.

Hot springs sound like heaven!

Hot Springs do sound like heaven.. So calming. I used to go all the time when I lived in Colorado and even California.

No hot springs on this Island but they do have them on The Big Island which I will never get to.

For 55 minutes!
Sydney to Honolulu. Change planes. Go to Chicago.
I didn't even have time to leave the airport.
I never even left the international concourse!
So, I'm not sure I was actually in Hawaii!

If your foot touches either the ground of a place or the floor of a building permanently affixed to the ground of a place, it counts as you actually being there.

But if you simply fly over or drive through without stopping, it doesn’t count. That’s like saying you’ve been to the moon just by seeing it at night.

Nothing formal; just a personal belief of mine.

But it’s why I count my five hour layover at the Warsaw airport last year as “being” in Poland.

So yes, you’ve get to say you’ve been to Hawaii.

Geez, if only I'd known, I'd have driven up to O'Hare!
Well, probably not!

I've been to Kaui, Maui, and twice to the big island of Hawaii.

My first trip was to Kaui, before the hurricane and all the development. We cashed in frequent flyer miles to keep it affordable. It truly was a paradise. Living in San Diego I hadn't cared much about going to Hawaii before that, but my husband talked me into it, after a few years of camping trips we splurged. The rain forests and waterfalls were things we don't see here in our arid beach areas in Southern CA. We stayed at a condo on the beach. We'd wanted to do the zodiac rafting trip along the Pali coast but it was cancelled due to high surf. So we took a boat that went to a waterfall instead and also a helicopter ride into the inner canyons but we later learned they crash a lot, so wouldn't do that again.

My second trip was as a travel writer; I was fortunate that my lodging was comped and I had enough air miles to fly free. I stayed at a B&B most of the time on Hawaii except for a night near the volcano on the far side of the island. We brought both our kids, who were young at the time and loved it. We hiked to a black sand beach, hiked to a waterfall, saw the volcano in action and hiked over cooled black lava, toured a macadamia nut farm owned by friends of our innkeeper, went horseback riding on hills above the beach, saw the historic ancient Hawaiian sites and more. The big island has 80% of the world's climate zones -- even a snow-capped mountain! We found a great little restaurant in Havi, an old sugar town, where they bake the pig all day in an underground pit and also found good Vietnamese food on the island, more affordable than other places. I interviewed a lot of innkeepers and found the B&Bs are charming in locations like on a coffee plantation, on a mac nut farm, and the one we stayed at has humpback whales come into its cove in winter, though we were there in summertime. Our lodging was free but the rates back then were way less than hotels. We even saw a Hawaiian rodeo where I interviewed an old cowboy who recalled swimming longhorns out to boats, interviewed the most famous lei maker in the islands, and got to see an ancient Heiau (temple) built in a single night by warriors in 400 AD, amazing, and the birthplace of Kamehamea; one of those was off limits to tourists unless you know a local.

Our third trip we waited too late to find cheap lodging so wound up at a pricey resort hotel on the beach in Maui. It was my least favorite island -- too commercial on one end, and the required driving on a very dangerous road as we found out coming back too late in the day, though the far side is beautiful. We heard the island frogs that were all over the resort we stayed at We did a luau, some of the tourist stuff we'd missed on our earlier trips. We got stuck in an elevator so the hotel comped us on dinner at the best restaurant we couldn't otherwise have afforded. Everything on Maui was more expensive than on the big island.

Then our daughter got a summer job in Hawaii so we went back to the big island and got to stay with her at an Air BNB for very low cost, just paying for our room. We were within walking distance of a beach on the gold coast, great little coffee shop nearby with health foods. We also went to the north coast and ate lunch at a vanilla plantation, saw sea turtles, but mostly just loafed around and relaxed. Hubby took the kids scuba diving and they even swam with giant manta rays. I relaxed at the spa as I was recovering from a bad car accident at the time; used some of the settlement money for that trip for some much needed R&R. The warm weather and humidity always make my aching bones feel better.

We can't afford vacations most years, so we save up. We've been married 41 years, and try about every 4 or 5 years to save up and do something worthwhile.

Being a travel writer sounds like heaven, and your descriptions of your trips was wonderful to read. Hubby and I are hoping to travel when he retires in 5 years.

We've been talking a lot about relocating to Central or South America. I can always tell he's had a bad day when I find him looking at properties in Costa Rica....lol

Our next trip was supposed to be Spring 2020. We have only been to Oahu. My husband is retired military so we stay at Hale Koa. The rooms are reasonable. The food and activities at the hotel is also reasonable. They even have a PX store for food, supplies, souvenirs, clothing and more. That is the only reason we can afford to return. We have are money saved for our next trip. Just waiting unti this covid mess is behind us.
