"War On Drugs.." is really War On Poor People.

I just saw a report on CNN about some women, (poor women, naturally,) spending months in jail for abusing oxycodone.

Two of the pills being on them would get them 60 days in a lockup with 10 other women.

Yet...

How much time did Rush the Fathead spend in jail for his abuse, even to the point of having his housekeeper go out and buy the pills?
We all know the answer to that.

criminalizing them forever.

They make money and gain power on all of it.

I give Attorney General Holder props for that, and his boss.

it's down from 100:1 to 18:1. Still not scientifically defensible, but better than before.

better, but not eliminated. The question is why haven't they been eliminated? Is it the profit demands of the prison industrial complex?

If someone wants to destroy their life injecting themselves with God-knows-what, who am I to say no? It's their life to waste as they will.

when used properly and discriminately , is a great help to people in severe pain . But taken only when the pain interferes with normal activities over an extended time . It CAN be addictive if you don't make the decision at the beginning to not become dependent on the drug.

with heavy physical withdraw symptoms. It's not a matter of choosing to not be addicted, if it were that easy addiction would not be an issue. Addiction is a disease, like cancer, or diabetes, you can't just wish it away, you have to treat it and manage it.

That fact that a drug is addictive is no reason to make it illegal.

IMHO, of course.

I was taking exception to the person who stated "Just don't get addicted to it" things just don't work that way.

I remember a statistic I read that over 70% of people in prison were below the poverty line before they were arrested.

The more money you have, the better lawyers you can afford, and the better lawyers you have, the more likely you are to get the results you want.

Those idiot wannabe Panthers in Miami the FBI talked into trying to make a "dirty bomb" leap to mind. Instead of tracking down, say, Saudi financiers, we typically pursue and imprison some scruffy, psychologically marginal person to hold up as the Bogey Man.

I mean, we saw the tremendous failure Ronald and Nancy Reagan had with their scholarly advice on illegal drugs. So like all good Republicans, the idea was embraced even as it bloomed into a massive waste of time and money and manpower. Republicans like to waste time and money. They love counterproductive policies.
