Rush Limbaugh Still Toxic For Advertisers One Year After Fluke Attacks
Limbaugh Is So Toxic That He's Damaging All Of Talk Radio
Blog ››› March 1, 2013 1:46 PM EST ››› ANGELO CARUSONE

It's been one year since Rush Limbaugh's invective-filled tirade against then-Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke. With hundreds of advertisers and millions of dollars lost, the business of right-wing radio is suffering, but Rush Limbaugh continues to act as if it were business as usual, which is why Limbaugh is still bad for business.

snip//

At a Talkers forum last year, Norm Pattiz, CEO of Courtside Entertainment, summed up the destructive effect Limbaugh has had on the entire industry, noting that a "tremendous chunk of advertising revenue was wiped out in terms of support for national talk radio programs." Pattiz added that "the movement in talk radio to some degree is moving away from conservative talk radio and into other genres."

Despite continued rebukes by advertisers, and seemingly without regard for the damage he is causing, Rush Limbaugh adds to the problem by proceeding as if it were business as usual.

Every day, Rush Limbaugh reminds advertisers why they should be wary about associating with right-wing radio by filling his airtime with the same kinds of bigotry, deceit, and chicanery that have come to define his brand.

<Dial Global, a radio syndication company, reported roughly $100 million in losses for
2012 and publicly cited Limbaugh as a significant contributing factor.> Not unless the
Koch Brothers or Exxon step in and subsidize Limbaugh he will soon be gone because
no business will stay in business if they keep losing money.

Sandra Fluke has more courage and integrity in a fingernail than he'll ever have. His attack on her should have convinced all advertisers to pull their support. Shame on those who didn't!

Advertising has always been an industry based on bullshit. The publishers / broadcasters invariably exaggerate the reach and impact of their product 1000 times over. Forever, advertisers just accepted that because they really couldn't measure anything. The Internet has started to change that. The efficacy of Internet advertising really can be measured. It isn't a trivial problem, but anybody spending millions for online advertising should be measuring the ROI precisely. And what they are finding is that advertising just isn't as effective as the publishers want you to believe.

Limbaugh can be thanked for bringing sunshine into the radio advertising game. I bet very few of his advertisers knew specifically what shows their ads would appear on or specifically targeted the Limbaugh placements. The real impact of the protests was to educate advertisers that their products were being associated with highly undesirable elements, and that the advertisers can and should take control over where their product is appearing. That is what has screwed Limbaugh and people like him.

Limbaugh has an interesting demographic. I would expect most of his listeners are low intelligence, low-education, and therefore low disposable income. That's not good for most products. But they are also extremely gullible and easily provoked to action with scare tactics, so that is perfect for products like Low-T, gold, and stuff like that.

Rush and the other overpaid Chickenhawk Republican Propaganda Pimps -- Hannity, O'Reilly, Beck, etc. ad nauseum -- have suckered the RepubliProles for decades. But now that the Proles are figuring out, they are pissed that the 'elite' republicans have been SUCKERING THEM FOR SO LONG.

RW radio wants that.

9. Some other considerations...
Sun Mar 3, 2013, 11:26 AM
Mar 2013

1. Right-wing chains purchased stations, implanted RW programming and often LOST market share. They knew they would, but they wanted market share and dominance & hegemony & purity of message and audience: The networks, imo, are part of a RW culture, and they are conciously aware of their role. It ain't all about following the money trail.

2. Lush Rambaugh is in an arms race wiith spittle-flying blowers even further to the right. He has to double-down or get shoved to the side by cheaper, louder blowholes.

to take in ad revenue, but their main objective is to blanket the airwaves with their poison, not make money off the poison itself. It's a propaganda wing, not firstly a money-making operation.
