Oddly Enough...it seems I trust DU now more than any other news website.

As the economy pulls down another news agency, or the print-media's failure to realize early that the "paper" in "newspaper" was pretty much a thing of the past the day the internet was invented, I have noticed that more and more I am starting my day with the Breaking News section of DU.

As side-boobs took over Huffington Post, Lindsey Lohan's latest idiocy took over the news and the main-stream media began running with stories that they weren't even fact checking, DU seems to have become my first source for news. You Duers with your thirst for knowledge and your willingness to call a turd a turd have become some of the best fact-checkers and information sharers on the internet. I have had some of my facts corrected by the best on here, that's for sure, and no matter how awesome and progressive the story is on here, you still have someone saying, "Link, please?".

Hats off to you my DU buddies. Happy Sunday Morning. Happy fact hunting to you. Thanks for catching me up on the news.

(and also a shout out to my organic, family farmed, sumatra dark roast coffee, french pressed (with an extra half a scoop of beans to make it extra dark, sugar and some fat free half and half...man-oh-man is this a good cup of jo)

lindsey lohan stories, sideboob photos, etc. etc. give me a good starting point.

Lol...I'm no saying I ONLY get my news from here, I pay for The NY Times, read the WA Post, LA Times regularly, Mother Jones and some blogs that I find appealing.

But DU is a good start point. There are posters on here that I trust very much. MadFloridian, for instance. I can't say that about any other website.

Fox does it's best to lie and promote a single agenda, we here at DU are a mob of similar leaning folks discussing and often correcting each other.

there is no liberal equal to Fox, so any comparison will be false.

and it requires you post a mainstream source, so I don't know what you are talking about here.

Obviously, if you use General discussion or Politics 2013, you are not going to necessarily get correct information depending on the poster. But then again, those are not billed as news sections.

There's very few falsehoods that stand unchallenged at DU. In the major media however, most - nearly all - falsehoods are allowed to pass with no challenge.

I'm not sure that DU attracts better information but I've seen that pretty much everything is pulled to bits and something that has been made to make some kind of sense usually surfaces... It's actually very interesting to me, we start out with a "spun" story and gradually the spin is stripped off. I think. Sometimes spin is added, however...

be vetted by replies and you can check sources yourself. Most folks here fact check for you and you can usually locate the source and verify. I have been taken to task myself for things I've posted and that's fine with me. If I'm wrong I want to know it and I want it 'proven' to me.

This place is tried and true! The news and links are always a good picture of what is going on.

My mother has been hooked on Faux for many years. At this point she still desperately needs to believe them but....she says that she can barely stand to watch it. She asked me where I got my news from and I said, 'Mom as much as you have mocked it over the years, DU will give you good sources with links.' I know that she will never come here but it is interesting to see her squirming and ungrounded. If she quits Faux then I know that our country has a chance. She is the benchmark for Faux insanity!

I may be wrong but it does appear as sources are vetted and only those deemed reliable are posted. I enjoy the debates and opinions where often the facts are exposed. Viewing through the DEM philosophy which is not safe in many other venues is priceless and learning to frame issues within that context without offense is helpful.

I'm not disparaging messageboard-websites like these, but as many here have pointed out, it's really just a hodgepodge of information, misinformation, and opinions. With nobody in any editorial position, it's up to each individual to decide what's true or not. Which is fine, but I cannot deny that the public is ill-served when they have to wade through so much misinformation and invective on every single issue to get to the truth. Serious discourse with those with opposing viewpoints is on the decline, and that is not good. At all.
