Bush aide: Palin ‘wasn’t competent enough’ for Fox News

Raw Story

President George W. Bush’s former chief strategist Matthew Down is slamming the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) for snubbing New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) while inviting former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R), who he asserts “wasn’t competent enough to keep a Fox News contract.”

...

“CPAC, to me, has totally diminished its credibility as an organization,” Dowd agreed. “And you invite Sarah Palin, who wasn’t competent enough to keep a Fox News contract? But she’s invited to CPAC meeting?”

Democratic strategist James Carville, however, welcomed the CPAC move as something that could help Democrats by elevating fringe elements in the Republican Party.

“Any day that you have more Sarah Palin and less Chris Christie is a good day for James Carville,” he quipped. “I’m all for it!”

More here....

Wow, 'not competent enough for FOX'. That says it all now, doesn't it?

I hate that woman but you can't dispute her numbers. CPAC is a political action committee. They can tally the numbers too.

While I think her brand of conservatism is going to split the Rethug party (and to a large degree it already has), and will ultimately lead to its demise, I'm guessing CPAC wants in on Sarah Palin's strategy for 2014.

She was a nobody until he tapped her. I suspect he assumed she must be fairly smart to be a Governor and quite popular. But no one actually knew anything about her until after the pick. And he couldn't back down at that point -- though he should have.

This is a perfect example of the danger of propaganda and magical thinking. Once he picked her the machine went into action, spinning her as a brilliant "real" American. Her Couric implosion only forced them to double down.

No one has done more damage to the Fox brand of conservatism. The spin they were spewing about Palin forced everyone to take another look at the nonsense Fox was pushing. Limbaugh and Hannity and Levin were out there daily, carrying the water, destroying what little credibility they had left.

I actually felt a little sorry for Palin for a couple weeks. She was so clearly unprepared, and I don't blame her one bit for trying to cash in on the stupidity of conservatives. But then I saw who and what Palin was. Ignorance I can forgive, arrogant ignorance is another story. And Palin is not only ignorant, she is mean and unprincipled.

you should give it a try. There were the political guys (Schmidt, etc) and then the lawyers - both sides thought the other had vetted her but it turned out they only asked questions like did she believe in evolution and would she support policies where she and McCain disagreed. It apparently came as a big surprise when she thought the Queen was the head of the government in Great Britain. There simply was no vetting. To me, the most startling part of the movie was when the Steve Schmidt character (played very well by Woody Harrelson) told her shouldn't just keep lying about stuff when it has already been reported she was lying - anyone who can do that has several screws loose.

Palin doesn't allow reality to stand in the way of her opinions, and this is portrayed by her defenders as a VIRTUE. The virtue of simple America and Jesus loving ignorance. I don't mind politicians not knowing something -- there's all kinds of things I don't know. I don't mind them making mistakes or saying stupid things -- I cannot go a day without doing (or posting) something cringe inducing. But I do not claim this as my great virtue. I do not say that my flaws and failures and ignorance make me a better person.

...That for at least some of the members of that fringe Palin's bobble head ignorance is endearing. That's what they want from a woman -- someone just smart enough to parrot Limbaugh and Hannity with conviction.

Do you recall the TV show they did about Sarah Palin's Alaska (that might have been the name actually) in which she is shown hunting something or other. She's blasting away at this thing and missing, then her dad or hubby gives her a different gun to shoot. All the while they are encouraging her. You can do it Sarah! Be careful of this gun Sarah, it kicks more than your gun! Here let me help you! Whatever. Eventually she (or someone) shoots the thing and Sarah gives the obligatory "circle of life" hunter speech.

At the time I was puzzled that they would show all that, since she is often portrayed as the rugged mountain girl next door, but she looked fairly silly. And of course she has editorial control. But then I realized that this was the point. She's playing to the fantasy. The Teaparty folks want her to struggle with that big old gun. Her job is to go out there and look willing and brave but desperately in need of a man. She's got to miss, get help from the men, miss some more, get more help and encouragement, and only then can she hit it.

To these people she represents the pinnacle of womanhood. She's attractive in a wholesome way, but innocently flirtatious as well. She's almost, but not quite, as smart as any man in the room. She would laugh at all of your jokes. She likes guns and hunting but she needs your help. She loves children, America, and Jesus. She doesn't trust nor need any of that ivy league book learning. She knows that Fox is real news, Obama is a socialist, Jesus is her savior, and her husband is her master.

Putting this lady out there as some feminine ideal is arguably the biggest insult the GOP has every handed to women, and it doesn't say a whole lot for their men either.

she was chosen was because she had a uterus and the pubs thought women disappointed that Hillary didn't get the nod would automatically switch from one uterus to another. That's how they think of women - that we couldn't possibly understand the issues and we'd just want to vote in one of our own. It was incredibly insulting and I still don't think they understand why they do so badly among women. I hope they never figure it out.

46. Forgive?
Sun Mar 3, 2013, 05:24 PM
Mar 2013

I struggle with that principle in general myself and likewise find it easier to forgive 'mere' ignorance in people. Have to since I live surrounded (almost drowned) by it where I retired to a little corner of the Midwest I call RedNeckLand - when they're not looking.

Leave aside arrogance. Any kind of willful ignorance is especially heinous and dangerous, especially in a supposedly educated person. I'd be a fool to expect much from people who brag on someone for almost making it to the 11th grade. And I admit that too many degreed folks don't really know much about anything; yet they're the ones without a leg to stand on. At least they obviously had a chance.

Until they had to leave for the sake of future political ambitions, Sarah and Todd belonged for several years to a radical right fascist group that advocates secession from the U.S. To me that's plain and simple treason. Why she didn't get hammered about it during the '08 campaign is beyond me. Maybe because our side figured it would get more GOP sympathy votes?

This is partly what explains my bottomless, utter contempt for the GOP and its tarbucket brigades. Regarding the latter, I haven't seen or heard much more sense from their degreed members either. And now they've driven poor Bob Woodard insane? Several times a year I write political letters to the editor of our local conservative rag sheet, and perhaps too often I finagle an excuse to whack at the neoConfederates, just daring them to go ahead and try to secede; THAT's when they'll see federal troops in the streets and maybe then they'll get a taste of what they deserve. Yes, I'm stupid enough to send such letters to print.

So far I've received 3 unsigned letters of support from people too scared to sign their names for obvious reasons. Among other niceties I've also had heavy glass beer bottles thrown at me from passing cars. When the GOP first took the House, a pickup load of the local alleged 'Patriots' showed up in front of my house cheering and waving their rifles. I went outside and smiled and waved while I took their picture. They took the hint and left. Haven't been back - so far. But they're out in the woods playing soldier all the time, preparing for that race war they claim the President wants to start.

Sheesh! All I wanted was a quiet, cheap place to retire and enjoy my books and animals. Sometimes it feels like it's already a war zone. Which it is, culturally speaking. I don't mean to whine even though I never dreamed things would turn out so hard. Among the totally apoliticals, I actually have a few friends. But I do owe future liberal retirees best wishes in having enough money to keep as far north as possible.

Looks like a professional turncoat to me. Started as a Democrat, changed sides, worked for Bush and then jumped ship during the second term.

And here's the description of his book, which seems like a monumental work of scholarship:

Dowd, Matthew J., Ron Fournier, and Douglas B. Sosnik. "Applebee's America: How Successful Political, Business, and Religious Leaders Connect With the New American Community." New York: Simon and Schuster, 2006. Includes interviews with people whom the authors met at Applebee's restaurants.
