The Democratic Party's most important job for 2014 must be to make his current tenure McConnell's last term in office.

(21,977 posts)But I'm just not confident that AJ is the one to do it. And her celebrity is sucking all the attention and oxygen out of the room, while we do have solid Dems who might have a legitimate shot at beating the Turtleman -- Allison Lundergan Grimes, e.g.
If we could get rid of both Turtlehead and Rand Crazy Paul, Kentucky would truly be heaven!

Tell us more about Allison Grimes
Bake
(21,977 posts)I'm aware that AJ has a master's from Harvard, and she is serious about issues she cares about. She has some baggage that will bother some folks--the whole Hollywood liberal thing (not that I think that's a bad thing, but some won't take her seriously and McConnell will capitalize on that), and she hasn't lived in KY for a long time. On the positive side, she has great name recognition and is an excellent communicator.
Grimes is the current KY Secretary of State. She's energetic, thoughtful, and very well thought of in most Dem circles in KY, and I think she'd make a heckuva candidate. She has the benefit of NOT being from Louisville, so she'll have a broader appeal out in the state (she's an attorney from Lexington)--people outside the 'Ville love to hate on Louisville. And she has already run for and won a statewide office.
We'll see what develops. I thought Jack Conway had a chance against Rand Paul until he totally self-destructed. So what do I know?

(6,699 posts)...and I'm not sure I would have voted for Conway. He was dismal at best. He kept pounding on this secret cult that paul belonged to back in his college days, and seemed to have NOTHING of substance to offer as a Senator to the US Congress. He was pathetic at best.
It was like watching michelle bachmann six years ago. I despised the clown, but her opponent wasn't even much better. This past election I thought her opponent was better, but still weak.
Unless we can allow the people of the state of Kentucky to select a strong, educated candidate, we are going to be stuck with turtle chin and crazy paul. That's how the game works. I seem to have too much faith in the electorate, and not as much in big money. I'm not sure Judd is the right person for the job. Perhaps she could get a little political experience under her belt before she tries jumping into a national senate race?

(3,709 posts)Jack was too green a candidate to run for such a high profile office. He was an still is an excellent AG for KY. I hope he might run for Lt. Gov with Abramson at the top of the ticket.
As for his Senate bid, he may have had the worst campaign staff I have seen at that level.
His internals were good prior to the horrid ad they ran against Paul regarding his drug use in college and the accusation that he had 'detained' a woman against her will. She first said yes, then denied that. I think if he had stuck to the course they were on, he might have had a chance. But he was still not experienced enough to run. And his campaign staff...they looked at me like I had grown another head when I asked them, thirty-one days out from the election what their absentee ballot program was. They didn't have one....
As for Alison Lundergan Grimes...I don't know a lot about her, but I do know a lot about her father...a former KY state rep...not the best reputationm which certainly doesn't preclude Alison from running but I'd like a better candidate. I wish the Lt. Gov Jerry Abramson would run but he wants to be governor, and our current, and excellent, Democratic Governor Steve Breshear says he done running for office.
Pickings are slim in the KY Democratic Party...hence, the possibility of Ashley Judd running.

(13,459 posts)A co-worker who is a less liberal Democrat than I am (pretty sure voted for President Obama though) mentioned her running the other day and he didn't seem to like it much, since she is an actress, didn't take her seriously at all and was hoping the Democratic Party would find someone else. I say that because he's an example of someone who is quite thoughtful here in Kentucky. Not nuts and generally in favor of more progressive ideas than most Kentuckians. But I think he'd not vote before voting for an actress.
Then you have the hate-mongers with their guns.............
