Please put litter in its place (you're scaring people)

From a local news channel's twitter

3:44 bomb squad investigating suspicious duffle bag in trash can near steps of fire dept headquarters.

I read about 3-4 bomb squad call outs a day for "suspicious bag, package, item... usually near or in a trash can." They shut down the nearest street and take a couple of hours to determine that someone threw something away in a trash can. It is never, I repeat never, a device meant to do harm.

Last week they shut down one of the malls here because if a "suspicious bag" near a trash can. It was nothing and people were allowed back inside a couple hours later.

So if you take nothing else from this rant, make sure when you throw something away that it makes it completely inside the trash can, else it may be interpreted as dangerous.

Did I need to mention this is in Floriduh?

that they're overreacting? It's not as if dozens of bombs are planted every day. In fact, I can't think of the last time an actual bomb was put some where in this country. What comes to mind is the one in Atlanta in the 96 Olympics. The Murrah building in 95 doesn't count because a vehicle was used, not a small package of some kind.

I'm seeing an amazing lack of common sense everywhere.
