Red (Winged) Hawk Down

Came home last night to find this in my back yard. Just standing there in the middle of the yard. About 15-16" tall. Every once and while he took one or two steps.

This is a look that says "And you thought you had a bad day". Does put it in perspective, eh?

The local raptor rescue folks think he'll pull through and be back up in the air in 6-8 weeks. This was shot from about 2 feet away.

Rescue guy though he might have clipped a power line but we couldn't figure out how he made it as far as our yard.

I thought bird fight and he said that hawk are really really smart. Apparently there's some IQ scale for birds and hawks are pretty much at the top. He said they almost always retreat before they lose flight. Didn't rule it out completely but said in 12 years, he's only heard of it once or twice. Maybe this is thrice ??

Shoulder muscle and wing damage too severe. He was never going to fly again and hawks aren't perch birds. As I understood it, the have to able to fly to feed. Even hawks and falcons are taken out to fly for food.

. But I guess we did our good deed helping this guy out with good intentions.
