"When I said... 'Michelle Shocked says God hates (slur for homosexuals),' I was predicting the absurd way my description of, my apology for, the intolerant would no doubt be misinterpreted," she said.Of course. It's the fault of all those insulted people who heard her and walked out of the show.
"But I am damn sorry," she said. "If I could repeat the evening, I would make a clearer distinction between a set of beliefs I abhor, and my human sympathy for the folks who hold them."
This backtracking may have something to do with how many venues and festivals have canceled Shocked's concerts. So far, clubs in Novato, Santa Cruz, Boulder, and Chicago have all canceled her shows, as has the Telluride Bluegrass Festival.

I was given to understand that she has been dealing with some fairly severe mental issues, which led me to feel sorry for her more than anything after what she did. When an illness causes someone to spew hate, I feel pity more than anger.
But this non-apology-it's-really-your-fault "apology" is pretty much right out of the RNC playbook. Now I'm just disgusted.

(47,953 posts)I hope she gets help. She sounds completely delusional and irrational.

(38,187 posts)The entire interview is rambling and she dodges every question asked, even though every question in this interview was asked with kid gloves. The interviewer literally coddled her and gave her every chance to speak her mind. If she spoke her mind in that interview, I highly doubt many people will understand her at all. It is disjointed, rambling, and makes no sense at all. I get the strong feeling she is not seeing reality at all. She keeps talking about truth and reality a lot, but seems to completely throw reality away when someone mentions it to her. It's very strange.
She has a history of making homophobic comments though. So, I wasn't shocked at all hearing the audio file of what happened at Yoshi's. I do think other than her homophobia, she has something strange going on in her head, not healthy either.

That is an accurate description of what she said.
Should she pretend she said something different for the purpose of then apologizing for it?
If someone wants to talk about other things she has said that's fine, but she did, as a factual matter, in the incident in question, say "god hates fags" as a characterization of how her other comments would be distorted on twitter.

(11,138 posts)I really don't want to be in the position of defending Michelle here but her remarks have been dramatically misinterpreted in the pile-on frenzy. That remark was entirely sardonic.
I am not surprised that people who have don't know her work and have never seen her perform jump to the conclusion that she was being literal. She wasn't. I can't prove that to anyone and won't bother to try, but I know it's true nonetheless.
Having said that, she has COMPLETELY blown it with this incident. She should have immediately picked up on the fact that what she was trying to say to her audience was not really coming across the way she intended. She could have corrected the impression immediately instead of just trying to play it off, and issuing a few cryptic tweets in the aftermath certainly hasn't helped her seem any less nuts. She seemingly is only now realizing that this is, in fact, a big deal.
Michelle has a serious problem but it isn't homophobia. It's ego.
Jamastiene
(38,187 posts)believe that. She was not misrepresented or misunderstood. She's been making these types of anti-gay comments for several years now.
In 2008, she said she was the "world's worst homophobe."

This is a pattern with her. She wasn't the least bit misunderstood or misrepresented.
Here is the actual audio where she says she agrees with those who hate gay people:

(11,138 posts)Thanks for that link. I retract what I said. I think there was a more nuanced point in there she was trying to make but it doesn't matter. She's lost her bloody mind. I mean that rather literally, she sounds like she's losing her grip on reality.
cthulu2016
(10,960 posts)No, she did not. The primary "feelings" expressed by the phrase "god hates fags" are raw hatred and raw intolerance.
You can characterize her feelings yourself. You can say, "As far as I am concerned there is no difference between any anti-gay position and saying 'god hates fags.'
That would be your characterization, to which you are entitled. And it might be valid. And I might generally agree with it.
And there is no doubt that she has religious objections to same-sex anything. That has been known for some time.
Bu to say that she said she "shared the feelings" in the way you meant it is just not true... false in spirit and literally false as well since her whole dumb rap was about her trying to separate what she thinks from that phrase denotes.
If you want to say something, say it honestly.
Is Michelle Shocked a homophobe? Yes.
Are people having tons of fun with the patently false claim that she said 'god hates fags' as an expression of her feelings about GLBTQ?
Yes. And it's sick. I's like a Romney commercial. I is willfully representing someone's overt expression of what they do not think as a statement of what they do think.
There ought to be some way to call out an avowedly anti-gay person without resorting to deception.

(38,187 posts)"I was in a prayer meeting yesterday, and you've gotta appreciate how scared, how scared folks on that side of the equation are. I mean, I mean, from their vantage point - and I really shouldn't say "their," cuz it's mine too, um, we are at nearly at the end of time. And, from our vantage point, uh, w're gonna be, uh, I think maybe Chinese water torture is gonna be the means, the method, once Prop 8 gets instated, and once, um, preachers are held at gunpoint, and forced to marry the homosexuals, I'm pretty sure that that will be the signal for Jesus to come on back."
It doesn't get any more honest than directly quoting from the audio, exactly what she said.

(27,670 posts)Seems to me that you are the one playing the creepy rhetorical games.
It's not a patently false claim that she hates LGBT persons.
'If she had said, "once Proposition 8 is instated and preachers are forced to marry blacks at gunpoint", would that not be a pretty clear indication of raw hatred and raw intolerance, a clear indication that she hated black people?
We get this shit all the time. Homophobia runs real deep, and easily hides in plain sight. Things that people say about us are ok, and not really indications of raw hatred, and intolerance, because, after all, we're only the *wink, snicker* teh gays.
We're all totally fucking sick of it, and totally sick of homophobe apologists as well.
And BTW, "Hate the sin, not the sinner" is our very favorite old standard bullshit line from religious bigots who hate us and say it at the exact same time that they are blatantly trying to justify preventing us from having the same equal human rights as everyone else.

(3,574 posts)that preachers being forced to perform marriages for homosexuals would be the cue for Jesus to come again.
Jamastiene
(38,187 posts)At least since 2008, she has been saying homophobic stuff. So, this is not out of character for her in recent years, nor was she misunderstood. She believes the crap she said. She even said so in the audio. She said she shared their views. She was not misunderstood the first time and her apology is a non-apology.
Zorra
(27,670 posts)at gunpoint'.
She readily admits that she is an anti-marriage equality religious bigot.
What more do you need to know?
The irony here is that she apparently does not even have the slightest clue that she is a raging bigot, compounded by the fact that she does not even know that Proposition 8 was an anti-lgbt measure sponsored and paid for primarily by ignorant religious bigots like herself.
