John Edwards' eldest daughter: I was mad, 'devasted' about affair

http://todaynews.today.com/_news/2013/03/27/17488488-john-edwards-eldest-daughter-i-was-mad-devastated-about-affair?lite&ocid=msnhp&pos=1

By Rick Schindler and Laura T. Coffey, TODAY

Cate Edwards, the eldest daughter of former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards and author and health-care activist Elizabeth Edwards, speaks to Savannah Guthrie in an exclusive interview that will air Friday on TODAY and “Rock Center with Brian Williams.”

In the interview — her first since her father's trial for alleged violations of campaign laws — Edwards opens up about her family, her late mother's legacy and Rielle Hunter. She reveals that her father first broke the news to her that he was having an affair with Hunter.

"He told me," the 31-year-old attorney and author said. "I guess he and my mom decided that that was, you know, how it needed to be done. So yeah, I was devastated. And I was disappointed. I mean, these are my parents. I had grown up with a lot of love in my family. And it was hard to see them go through this."

"Were you mad (about the affair)?" Guthrie asked.

"Yeah, yeah, of course," Edwards replied.

Edwards told Guthrie that she met Hunter, a film producer, early in her father's campaign. Guthrie asked Edwards about a book Hunter wrote that "said some pretty unpleasant things" about Elizabeth Edwards."He told me," the 31-year-old attorney and author said. "I guess he and my mom decided that that was, you know, how it needed to be done. So yeah, I was devastated. And I was disappointed. I mean, these are my parents. I had grown up with a lot of love in my family. And it was hard to see them go through this."

Yes, many of us were devastated along with Cate, but I can't imagine what she and her mother went through. For new DUers who don't know, Elizabeth Edwards was a DUer. I had already cast my primary vote for John just before he dropped out of the race. The scandal then erupted.

Oh well, spilt milk and all.

1. I always thought the best Edwards was Elizabeth--she should have run for office way back when.

She had "the right stuff" and could connect with people.

I never warmed to "himself"--he didn't seem terribly sincere to me. But EE--she came off as authentic.

I think even if they had divorced because of his Appalachian trail failure, she would have probably gone on and run for office herself. I know we here at DU would have pushed her to do it.

I always got the impression that he was more comfortable as a lawyer than as a politician.

John Edwards was a skunk - his behavior despicable. That said, I read that Elizabeth was tyrannical, abusive and scary. Don't so easily proclaim her sainthood.

So, why do some of us even bother saying "there's another side?" I don't know.

Yes, it's hearsay. Yes, i have it on authority from people who were having conversations at her funeral. People who knew her for years. As do I suspect some of the other posters.

She wasn't a saint. Who is? Does anyone have to be to be geniunely appreciated and mourned as a human being?

It doesn't justify his abysmal behavior, though I always cut him a lot of slack because of what happened to Wade. But there came a point....

And, I believe he made a lot of his points about two America in good faith.

I wish it were black and white. Both were/are complex people--gee, like the rest of us.

Stated he came from the "roots" of America, but never lived it in his political life. Basically, he abandoned the American people. Oh......but wait. That's a common perception of politicians, so he is not alone. Unfortunately, it's reality more than perception. A sad state of affairs.

May he never attempt any sort of comeback, EVER.
repeat-EVER.

The day John Kerry was forced to pick him as VP, was the day I knew Kerry would never be seated as President.
(and I was quite vocal about this back in 2004 too as anyone who knew me then knows especially as my board name is based back then on wanting Senator/Gov. Bob Graham, for VP, and being told by the Edwards people that Graham was old, ugly, and boring.)

Thankfully, President Obama and Hillary Clinton creamed him in the 2008 primaries, and neither fell prey to his crap.

Had he been the nominee, he would have lost and President McCain would be in his second term with VP Palin.

No wonder Today is far from the lead in morning shows having been way overtaken by Good Morning America (and in NY, the local Fox morning show) and NBC doing so bad in primetime.

imho.

One things for sure, I never fell for him.
Question for all time is-who has the biggest ego? John Edwards or Ralph Nader.
How they both thought of themselves.

Thank God for Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

14. A worse fraud than Nixon? Than McCarthy? Than Palin? Than Dubya? Than Clinton? ....

It was terrible, terrible personal behavior. Selfish and juvenile. And persistent lies. But, then again, what about Clinton? Didn't they both have silly affairs and lie? How about that former governor from South Carolina now running for Congress? How about Vitter the whore monger who GOT re-elected? How about Weiner? Are they all monsters? Who is worse? Who can say?

The list goes on and on and on. How about Thomas Jefferson? How many of Sally Hemmings' children did he father?

Edwards is not a monster, and I believe he believed in his caring for the poor and working people of this country. He made a terrible personal mistake and lied about it. It was very, very selfish. And I think he knows that because he has said so. But it doesn't make him a monster, and we are supposed to believe in forgiveness. What about Elliot Spitzer. He whored, lived a lie, and now a tv commentator on national tv. How about Reagan? He had an affair with Nancy while still married with her getting pregnant while he was still married, albeit divorce pending. She was certainly pregnant before they wed. And then his horrid actions while in office with aiding the Sandinistas, helping the death squads in Guatamala, etc. ???? Who is the worst, really? How about Jackson and his treatment of the Indians? Johnson and Nixon in Vietnam? It goes on and on and on.
