2009: Obama appoints Monsanto VP and perpetual career revolving-door FDA "advisor"/Monsanto chief lobbyist Michael Taylor as FDA food safety czar.

While Taylor was at the FDA in the early 90's, he also oversaw the policy regarding Monsanto's genetically engineered bovine growth hormone (rbGH/rbST) -- injected into cows to increase milk supply. The milk from injected cows has more pus, more antibiotics, more bovine growth hormone, and most importantly, more insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). IGF-1 is a huge risk factor for common cancers and its high levels in this drugged milk is why so many medical organizations and hospitals have taken stands against rbGH. A former Monsanto scientist told me that when three of his Monsanto colleagues evaluated rbGH safety and discovered the elevated IGF-1 levels, even they refused to drink any more milk -- unless it was organic and therefore untreated.
Government scientists from Canada evaluated the FDA's approval of rbGH and concluded that it was a dangerous facade. The drug was banned in Canada, as well as Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. But it was approved in the US while Michael Taylor was in charge. His drugged milk might have caused a significant rise in US cancer rates. Additional published evidence also implicates rbGH in the high rate of fraternal twins in the US.
Taylor also determined that milk from injected cows did not require any special labeling. And as a gift to his future employer Monsanto, he wrote a white paper suggesting that if companies ever had the audacity to label their products as not using rbGH, they should also include a disclaimer stating that according to the FDA, there is no difference between milk from treated and untreated cows.
Taylor's disclaimer was also a lie. Monsanto's own studies and FDA scientists officially acknowledged differences in the drugged milk. No matter. Monsanto used Taylor's white paper as the basis to successfully sue dairies that labeled their products as rbGH-free.

I have no words for how horrifying this is.

(18,290 posts)Not to enable it. So, it's an incorrect use of the term.
Obama was not required to sign the legislation, but he did so. He also, as Chief Executive, had the privilege to use his bully pulpit as much as he wanted to shape the spending bill; he chose not to do that, too. His hand-picked choice for FDA food safety czar gives an indication why.

In other words: In the USA a company can be successfully sued for putting a true statement on its labels.
Also: Fox News successfully fought off a wrongful termination suit from two reporters who refused to lie to their audience. The court ruled that it is not against the law for a news program (using the public airwaves) to knowingly lie to their audience.
Think about it. That is the state of the country we live in, in a nutshell.

(493 posts)I'm outraged that Congress allowed Section 735, the Monsanto Protection Act in a short-term spending bill and passed it and that President Obama has now signed it into law. This is a deep betrayal of our most basic constitutional rights and by signing H.R. 933 without issuing a signing statement or taking other actions to block this provision you have allowed great harm to America's family farmers, our environment and our democracy.
In an effort to balance this violation of our basic rights, I am urging President Obama to issue an Executive Order to require the mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods, something that you promised farmers while on the campaign trail in 2007.
It is urgent that the U.S. government rectify the 20 year old politically engineered loophole and allow for open and transparent labeling of genetically engineered foods, a basic right that citizens in 62 others countries already enjoy.

(62,325 posts)position in our government? I thought we were going to end that practice when we voted for Democrats?
Unbelievable! And Obama choose this liar over all the good people he could have chosen for that position.
Can someone explain to me why there is no outrage at least among Democrats over these kinds of appointments? Why the silence from the Left?

(39,909 posts)He appointed Tom "Mr Monsanto" Vilsack to run the Department of Agriculture in 2009.
Tom Vilsack is the former Gov. of Iowa (GMO Monocrop Corn and Factory Pig Farms)
Google: Vilsack & Monsanto
And that in only the tip of the iceberg.
The agencies that oversee our Food and Farms are infested with former mMonsanto employees, lobbyists, and lawyers.

(116,464 posts)Consumer Federation of America today applauded the Obama Administration for appealing a World Trade Organization panel decision that ruled against U.S. country-of-origin labeling for meat.
U.S. consumers overwhelmingly support country of origin labeling, said Chris Waldrop, Director of CFAs Food Policy Institute. We are pleased that the Administration recognizes the importance of providing consumers with this information and will defend our country-of-origin labeling law before the WTO.
Implemented in 2009 after years of advocacy by consumer and farming groups, the COOL law provides consumers with basic information about the origin of meat products, fish and seafood, fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables, and certain nuts. The November 2011 WTO panel decision affirmed the right of the United States to require country-of-origin labeling for meat products, but considered some provisions as barriers to trade. In February, consumer groups wrote to President Obama urging him to appeal the ruling, noting that allowing the decision to be upheld could undermine consumers faith in the fairness of the WTO.
Many countries across the globe have some form of country-of-origin labeling, Waldrop said. U.S. consumers have a right to know where their food comes from as well.
