Gay marriage: 10 who switched sides
Here are 10 public figures, here and across the country, who switched:
Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire announced her support for marriage equality to her daughters at Thanksgiving, 2011, and less than five months later was signing same-sex marriage into law. The Evergreen State, along with Maine and Maryland, voted for marriage equality in November.
Ex-Vice President Dick Cheney was on the 2004 ticket that used anti-gay marriage measures to rally evangelical voters in 11 states. Cheney is now a supporter of marriage equality, and has watched his daughter Mary marry her longtime partner. The couple are raising two children.
Hillary Clinton opposed same-sex marriage as a presidential candidate in 2008, but announced her support two weeks ago as possible prelude to a second White House bid in 2016. It is unlikely that anyone could oppose marriage equality and be a viable candidate for the Democratic nomination.
Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., was another of the 85 Senators who voted in 1996 for the Defense of Marriage Act. As the Supreme Court prepared to hear arguments this week, the six-term lawmaker announced his switch of position.
Meg Whitman supported Californias Prop. 8 as a Republican candidate for governor in 2010, a race in which Whitman spent $146 million of her own money. Now the president-CEO of Hewlett Packard, Whitman signed a brief asking the Supreme Court to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act.
