It may sound like a whale of a tale, but an 8-year-old San Rafael girl who was struck by an arrow outside a life-size whale structure outside the Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley is telling the truth.
Nadine Hairston-Millington was hit by an arrow while playing the popular structure on Tuesday during a school field trip. The arrow lodged in her leg and required hospital doctors to remove the 20-inch cross bow.
"It hurt, it hurt a lot so I started crying a little," the third grader told NBC Bay Area on Wednesday. "I stopped when my teacher came over."
Rushed to the hospital in an ambulance, Nadine said she sang Taylor Swift songs to stay calm: "My teacher put Taylor Swift songs on and we both sang the words together since she is my favorite singer."
It's not quite clear how the arrow struck the girl, or who did it.

(5,815 posts)My partner goes up that way every Sunday for archery practice. It's mostly children and young adults, but a few adults as well.
If I had to guess, you had someone(s) with a bow and "Let's see how far I can shoot this."
In other words, idiocy.

(20,776 posts)To hear 8-year-old Nadine Hairston tell it, she "saved the whale" when an arrow fell from the sky and pierced her leg as she played on a life-size sculpture of a fin whale outside the Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley.
Though the crossbow arrow lodged in her thigh during the Tuesday field trip, Nadine is doing well after surgery at Children's Hospital Oakland to remove the object, her mother, Alicia Hairston of San Rafael, said Wednesday.
Nadine actually wanted to go back to school immediately, but her mother told her she had to rest.
"It's shocking," Hairston said of the incident. "Don't take it out of context, but if it's going to happen, it happened to the right child. She's just an amazing child. She's always been remarkably resilient and courageous and brave."
Nadine said she was sliding down the whale when she felt a pain in her leg, her mother said. She jumped off and tried to run, but couldn't.
