JACKSON, MSCiting a wish to maintain the quality of life for residents across the state, the Mississippi Senate on Thursday passed a bill outlawing the sale of soft drinks in containers smaller than 20 ounces. We have a responsibility to ensure that Mississippians are consuming sugary beverages at an acceptably high and constant rate, and this ban will see to it that this standard is upheld, said State Sen. Terry W. Brown (R-District 17) in a morning news conference, adding that the new law will be strictly enforced by state authorities and that any business caught selling soda, coffee, tea, lemonade, sports drinks, or energy drinks in standard cans or containers rather than 64 or 85-oz. cups will be subject to a fine. This isnt just about the comfort of individual consumers, its about the welfare and overall happiness of entire communities. The fact that a resident of this state could consume less than the equivalent of 16 packets of sugar in one beverage is simply unacceptable, and it demands immediate action. Brown also called for stricter limits on diet sodas, the sale of which Mississippi lawmakers hope to restrict to minors by the end of the year.

I don't think they're all awful there. They are people of all colors and walks of life. Some are rich, many aren't, some have advantages, many don't. I don't think they're all mean, though, even if they've got some dumbass politicians with big mouths and halfassed ideas.
Morgan Freeman lives there, he's the Movie President...it can't be all bad if he can stand the place...

(3,427 posts)It is now illegal for local governments in Mississippi to put any restrictions on portion sizes or ingredients, require nutritional information to be displayed, or ban "Happy Meals". As if there was any danger of that happening in Mississippi.

(10,745 posts)The South, outside some of the biggest cities and college towns, is far from a libertine paradise and if a popular politico could just convince Southern conservatives that banning stuff would help them, they'd be jumping all over that.

(14,046 posts)Last year's ban on serving any solid food that has not been deep-fried, made this legislation necessary.
There was also an amendment to remove the minimum salt requirement from deserts.

(6,907 posts)I'm not knocking on Mississippi, only been to oxford for football game and through the I-10 corridor passing through. But I've known lots of good folks from there. All of our states have weird beer laws, here in Tennessee you can't sell wine and beer in the same store.
