Wal-Mart looking to "crowdsource" online deliveries...

(Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc is considering a radical plan to have store customers deliver packages to online buyers, a new twist on speedier delivery services that the company hopes will enable it to better compete with Amazon.com Inc.

Tapping customers to deliver goods would put the world's largest retailer squarely in middle of a new phenomenon sometimes known as "crowd-sourcing," or the "sharing economy."

A Plethora of start-ups now help people make money by renting out a spare room, a car, or even a cocktail dress, and Wal-Mart would in effect be inviting people to rent out space in their vehicle and their willingness to deliver packages to others.

Such an effort would, however, face numerous legal, regulatory and privacy obstacles, and Wal-Mart executives said it was at an early planning stage.

Package delivery people likely won't be screened for criminal past or sexual deviation, ie, rape. Walmart would be wiser to go in full bore with the US Postal Service, have customers order online and have the USPS deliver. Delivery costs would be lower than FedEx and UPS and the USPS would get a good infusion of new cash.

instead of "PAY store customers to deliver packages"

I'm really curious to know how they'd pull this off, and how this would be cheaper than conventional methods...

What about package theft? Liability? What happens when the package deliverer gets shot in the driveway in the next inevitable "Stand your ground" case?

Maybe I should back up to square one -- WHO in the name of HELL would even WANT to do this?? Most people's time and gasoline are worth more than a $10 gift card...

I swear to god, whatever Wal-Mart is offering people (for discussion's sake I'll say $10), I will offer $10.01 for that person to deliver meals to seniors or some other service that actually does GOOD for humanity...

The absolute last thing I'd want is my electronics (not that I am shopping Wal Mart period, much less for electronics...) is Jane/John Doe handling it.

You got it.
And Walmart sells guns and drugs.
I wouldn't want some unknown unbonded person delivering anything, let alone those two things to me.

(and how will they know the item arrived?)

Whaaaat? I do not want some stranger showing up at my home who is not either a UPS person, a FedEx person or a postal employee..at least they are EMPLOYEED and less likely to steal that which they are supposed to deliver?

I guess this is sorta like a pizza delivery person...only they are if not employees, contractors...they do not use customers to make deliveries...IS THIS INSANE OR WHAT?

I recon WalMart knows their customers are poor and desperate..so they can abuse even them?

of course there will be additional costs to the delivery person. They would have to pay for insurance that would cover their liability should there be an accident while delivering. If there is a biting dog incident, slippery steps etc. at the recipients house, are customers required to prove they have insurance to cover such things or will WalMart fight every case to the death?
