THIS IS NOT A COINCIDENCE

It's by Laci Green, and it's called: "Elliot Rodger: More Than A Madman". She tackles the topic with humor, anger, and insight.
.......
Perhaps my favorite bit was this:
"Something's wrong here."
So they called in law enforcement, and the sheriff was like, "Well, he seems kinda timid and not very violent -- nothing to see here." Beside the fact that he was, you know, posting his plans to slaughter his peers on YouTube -- "nothing to see here."
The fact that Elliot was dismissed was partially because we've normalized this idea of violent masculinity. This stuff didn't raise enough red flags because the sheriff thought, "Hey, he's got a lot of aggressive feelings, just like any other guy. It's nothing to be concerned about."
The emasculation that Elliot Rodger felt eventually amounted in him following the manual written for boys: "Don't be a pussy. Do what it takes to take back control." And that's exactly what he did.

No, we haven't. Good point, then jumped the shark.

(60,010 posts)The chilling thing about the videos, esp. the last one, the manifesto video....
I watched it the day before the killings.
And despite all my Mental health experience, my first thought was that is was a hoax. It seemed "stagy"
the 2nd viewing clued me in that this guy, in his monotone, was possibly showing signs of serious depression.
Which made me think.."oh oh".
But to tell the truth, most people watching would have expected someone who said how much they hated being ignored,
to be acting more frustrated and angry and not calm.

(16,199 posts)I have a strong interest in plants, and like to grow both vegetables as well as flowers. And I get a lot of perennial varieties of flowers, all set to bloom at different times with different varieties of colors. I enjoy seeing the blossoms. So I go to the home and garden stores sometimes with just the goal of getting some new type of flowering plant and as I load them onto a cart, I'm always asked "getting some plants for your wife?" I then say no and the men at the store will back away or get this quizzical look on their face as to why a 270 pound thirty four year-old man is buying flowers. Ms. Green is correct that society has these expectations of men. Apparently the only reason a man should buy flowering plants is that they are destined for a woman.
Our cultural view of masculinity is stupid. It leads men to act more aggressive than required and often results in men treating women like shit. And as Ms. Green pointed out, sometimes it kills.

(68,644 posts)The problem that needs to be solved in in the society and in the broken hearts and souls of the perpetrators.
Progressives who fall for "Stop and Frisk" Billionaire Bloomberg'f Failed Ideas remind me of the same folks who believed NAFTA would "raise all ships".
Don't fall for it, we should be smarter than that.
Fix the problem, the root problem.
Don't be distracted by tricks for quick fixes that haven't worked and won't work now.
