Snowden’s lawyer compares him to a runaway slave using the Underground Railroad

Ben Wizner, attorney for NSA leaker Edward Snowden, got into it with Up host Steve Kornacki Sunday morning over whether Snowden had sacrificed his moral authority as a whistleblower by fleeing the United States (and eventually ending up in Russia) rather than accepting the legal consequences of leaking classified information. To this Wizner posed: “Do you think people who used the Underground Railroad should have stayed and faced the consequences of the Fugitive Slave Act?”

“So you’re likening them?” Kornacki asked. “That’s quite a comparison.”

Wizner quickly backed away from the direct comparison, amending thusly: “I’m saying if Reverend King had gone to New York instead of going to prison in Birmingham, no one would have said he didn’t stay in Birmingham to face the music.”

“But part of the moral power of that was civil disobedience,” Kornacki said. “He was willing to get arrested, he was willing to pay the price legally, even if it was unjust. That’s part of the moral power of civil disobedience, isn’t it?”

others fled to unincorporated territories.

Sometimes slaves were tricked into slavery back in Africa, by their fellow Africans, just as Snowden was tricked into betraying the Constitution by his employer. But usually, they were captured by rival tribes and sold to the white men.

It really helps to have a little historical information, if you are going to try to make a convincing argument on DU.

There is nothing offensive about fighting injustice and tyranny and defending the Constitution from an illegal regime. For such is the NSA.

Not many slaves fled to Canada and they did not release foreign intelligence when they did. They didn't choose slavery. Snowden applied for his last NSA job knowing what he would be doing. He wasn't "tricked" into it. He isn't fighting tyranny. He is helping push tyrant Putin's propaganda.

As a black woman it pissed me off to have him have his people compare his situation to being a runaway slave, it is false and disrespectful. The struggles my ancestors lived were life or death situation and they had no ownership over themselves, they were raped, their children sold, and this little punk wants to pretend like his getting on a plane, eating peanuts and sammiches, is anything like the underground railroad makes me want to spit in his face.
Then the MLK comparison.
Are they series!1! MLK stayed his ass at home and fought everyday in the struggle for civil rights leading to jail, and death. Snowden isn't fit to lick the boots of my ancestors with his phony martyrdom or compare himself to MLK. I can't stand when people try to co-opt something that has nothing to do with them and make false comparisons.

The segregationists had somewhat of a history of encouraging civil rights workers to shut up, leave, or die

That's why Bethel Baptist Church had been dynamited on Christmas Day in 1956, but Rev Shuttlesworth decided to stay in town and led his announced protest the next day anyway

It's why Bull Connor didn't interfere with the Klansman who attacked Freedom Riders in the Birmingham Trailways Station on 14 May 1961

Rightwing political violence was endemic in Birmingham then. King went to jail on 12 April 1963 knowing that Bull Connor had just been re-elected, knowing that violence was a real threat in jail, and knowing that bail money might not be available

Things didn't change quickly

In May 1963, Bull Connor was attacking children with fire hoses and police dogs

The Sixteenth Street Baptist Church was dynamited shortly before Sunday services on 15 September 1963, killing four children

Dr. King faced his critics and the institutional structure that facilitated inequality. His jail time was an example of that injustice and he made sure people knew it. Even now, disability advocates take pride in getting arrested because it becomes a platform to present a vivid example of injustice.

If Snowden was a mature, thoughtful person fighting the power, he would be eager to make his case in court as part of a mission for what he believes is the greater good.

What about the innocents in Gitmo? And yes, some have been judged innocent, but they are still imprisoned there...

Or the "collateral damage" in drone strikes? Women, children, wedding parties?

This government has shown precious little concern for people, including its own citizens, or the Rule of Law, which has been completely abandoned in civil and criminal cases, even to the point of insisting on carrying out the death penalty on people who are patently not guilty, whenever it's convenient for the abuser.

Please spare me your indignation. Edward Snowden fulfilled the first and highest duty of an American citizen: he called his country to task for violating its own Constitution. That he succeeded so completely is a tribute to his keen observation of how other whistleblowers tried (and failed), his impressive intelligence and problem-solving ability, and his strength of character.

He could have kept pulling down the big bucks, living a cushy life in a tropical paradise, ignoring the crime, but HE KNEW THAT WAS WRONG. So he did the only morally, ethically right thing he could. And he did it in a smart way, that actually made reform possible.

And if you think his life wasn't threatened and still isn't, I don't think there's anything that can help you. Whether it's due a failure of imagination or education, your chances of survival are much less than Snowden's in similar circumstances.

But he's not James Bond or anything - then he is James Bond. Really, he is.

Now he's trying to convince his delusional sycophant fans that he's a runaway slave.

Next up for Little Eddie: he's really been Justin Bieber all along.

BTW, Fast Eddie, you *chose* to leave Hawa'ii. Slaves didn't chose to be slaves. They were *forced* into it. That's just ONE difference. Furthermore, MLK's era with that of Civil Rights, not the Antebellum period, Mr. Wizner......they aren't the same thing. Not even close.

At least this man had the sense to back away from this LUDICROUSLY stupid and offensive meme, which I have seen more than once on DU. Again, anyone surprised by that? Anyone?

The more the man and his supporters talk, the more surreally stupid they ALL seem.
