Doughnut wars are about to heat up in Southern California!

mom-and-pop shops are bracing for an East Coast storm with hurricane strength: Dunkin’ Donuts. The doughnut giant is marching West with 1,000 locations planned in California. More than 80 are in the works for the greater Los Angeles area.

Three have opened in San Diego, Camp Pendleton and Barstow.

“Everyone was running around like the sky was falling,” San Diego doughnut shop owner Santiago Campa said when Dunkin’ arrived in March.

and never visited the joint, and only have a distant memory of the donut in the sky.

My son is attending UCLA, so my fantasy is for us to travel down south and visit him, then steal a morning to shoot down to Randy's and snag a sack of the forbidden food.

are far better than winchells. the overrated krispy kreme didn't hurt them much either.

one of my favorite indie places was near my work and had one of the best and cheapest thai iced teas . i think they had to leave because of rising rent . and right next to it was another indie diner type of place which had great food but also had to go for similar reasons.

We have a place in town only two years in business just voted one of the top 10 doughnut shops in the country. Problem is they've started screwing around with the recipes (I'm guessing to save money) and ruined the quality of some of the offerings. They won't be on the list next year if they keep it up.

Krispy Kreme Opening 20 More Shops in Southern California

One of the first openings (if not the first) will happen soon in Palmdale--just a block away and on the same street where a Krispy Kreme shop closed after only a few years.

I lived out there in the early 90's and, oddly, one of the first thing I noticed was just how many donut shops were there.

It was uncanny, especially in the Hollywood area. There was one on virtually every corner or in every strip mall.

and to quote homer simpson (twice) in regards to donuts: "Mmmm, purple" and "donuts; is there anything they can't do?"

still have plenty of local franchises or mom and pop shops to get donuts from, so the arrival of KK 10 years ago and DD last year were both met with a collective "meh". It's funny when people bring in a dozen Dunkin Donuts to work, only 3-4 are taken all day, whereas when they go to a local place like Lamar's or Fluffy Fresh the entire dozen is gone in about 15 minutes. We know good donuts here!
