Thai coup protesters have adopted the Hunger Games’ three-fingered salute

At demonstrations against Thailand’s military government continued this weekend, protesters unveiled their newest tactic: Appropriating the three-fingered salute from the Hunger Games, which the movies’ downtrodden citizens use as a silent rebuke to their dystopian government.

Ever since the Thai military seized power last month, protesters have been using social media to organize hit-and-run demonstrations in Bangkok, and on Sunday they made a last-minute change of venue, gathering at the downtown shopping district’s Terminal 21 mall. They were opposed by hundreds of soldiers and police, who have mobilized at possible protest sites around the city to pre-empt large-scale demonstrations. At least four people were arrested, including one woman who was dragged into a taxi by undercover police after giving the three-finger salute.

Thais are avid consumers of pop culture, including the Hunger Games movies, so it’s not surprising that they have chosen to use the salute favored by cinematic heroine Katniss Everdeen. Adding to the cultural mash-up, protesters on Sunday said the three fingers stand for liberty, brotherhood, and equality—a slogan associated with the French Revolution that is now the official motto of France.

Groups opposing 22 May coup banned from displaying three fingers in the air as Thai junta clamps down on protest

Thailand's military rulers say they are monitoring a new form of silent resistance to the coup – a three-fingered salute borrowed from science fiction blockbuster The Hunger Games – and will arrest those in large groups who ignore warnings to lower their arms.

The raised arm salute has become an unofficial symbol of opposition to Thailand's 22 May coup, and a creative response to several bans the ruling junta has placed on freedom of expression.

"At this point we are monitoring the movement," said Colonel Weerachon Sukhondhapatipak, a spokesman for the ruling junta. "If it is an obvious form of resistance, then we have to control it so it doesn't cause any disorder in the country."

Asked what the symbol meant, some protesters say it stands for the French revolution's trinity of values: liberty, equality, fraternity, while others say it means freedom, election and democracy. A photo montage circulating online paired a picture from The Hunger Games with a graphic of three fingers labelled, 1. No Coup, 2. Liberty, 3. Democracy.

Sounds like the military views the Hunger Games salute as a threat to cause "disorder" in the country. That "disorder" apparently "represents resistance against the authorities" which the Thai military cannot endure. The salute includes calls for democracy and liberty, things that a military coup cannot see as in its self-interest.
